Never give up on the students. Everyone is different and has different capabilities. They take varied amount of time to grasp a concept. Knowing that tutor is there for you, no matter the time taken, is a huge relief for a student. I understand and prepare the subjects by myself before explaining to others which gives me clarity of thought. I have…

I consider persistence to be the most important thing a tutor can do for a student. Every student has a weakness in some subject, so persistence and striving to teach them despite setbacks or failure is an integral part of their eventual success. This also demonstrates to the student that their success is important to you, which is also extremely…

A tutor should be there to teach but also there as a mentor. As someone who's gone through the stress and struggle of the HSC and schooling in NSW, understanding the students needs and is just as important as helping them learn My strengths as a tutor are similar to the strengths I had as a student. I'm resilient and willing to take new approaches…

When I was a student, I had many tutors who helped me as a mentor and guided me through not just schoolwork but also the ups and downs in friendships with other students and relations with teachers. Hence, I believe that the most important things a tutor can do for a student is to be there emotionally and help them grow as a person. Although…

A tutor needs to be able to approach a question in different ways with different techniques. The confidence and discipline that tutors can help student build. Also to lead and motivate students to understand the purpose of what they are studying rather than mindlessly teach the content. My strengths as a tutor is that I’m very patient with my students no matter the question, in terms of how I will teach I tend to be more strict to try…

I think the most crucial aspect of tutoring is fostering a genuine connection with the student. By understanding their unique learning style, motivations, and challenges, a tutor can tailor their approach to provide personalised guidance. Building a supportive and empathetic relationship will create a comfortable environment where students feel…

Through my previous experience, I find that giving a student confidence is the most valuable aspect of tutoring. Often children may be embarrassed or not engage in a class enough to ask a question, and therefore they fall further behind. One-to-one tutoring is able to engage a student on an individual level to help them learn at their own speed…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do is help students understand not just how to solve problems, but why they matter and how they apply in the real world. When students see the bigger picture, they naturally become more interested in the subject. A tutor should also encourage good learning habits, pushing students to think for…

The most important thing a tutor can give a student is a sense confidence in their own abilities. As a tutor, by relaying my own knowledge and skills to the student, they were able to foster their own skillset in mathematics and english. I was able to watch them grow a sense of confidence in themselves, as they progressively solved more difficult…

Inside CarlingfordTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Alice focused on solving ratio word problems and worked through homework covering basic algebraic equations.

For Year 9, Daniel practised using angle rules for parallel lines and calculated the area of polygons as part of his current schoolwork.

In Year 11, Michael completed revision on probability and interest topics, including working through several trial paper questions to prepare for upcoming assessments.

Recent Challenges

A Year 7 student struggled to recall key decimal and unit conversion rules, which slowed progress in multi-step maths questions—"he needed a breakdown and stronger understanding of certain concepts."

Meanwhile, a senior student preparing for financial maths became stuck when analysing payment tables, hesitating over which formula to use and losing valuable test time.

In English, one high schooler's motivation dipped after setbacks with creative writing, making it harder to experiment with new techniques.

At primary level, a child repeatedly forgot homework due to focusing on practice tests; this left gaps in revision and caused confusion when similar topics reappeared.

Recent Achievements

One Carlingford tutor noticed a Year 10 student who used to make frequent "silly mistakes" in maths now actively checks his working for errors and spends more time reading questions before answering.

In Year 11, a student who previously hesitated with annuities is confidently using future value tables on her own and tackling harder examples without prompting.

Meanwhile, a Year 5 student who struggled with rounding numbers has started explaining the rounding process out loud before solving, showing new independence during problem-solving. Last session, she rounded up to the nearest ten and completed all calculations correctly without reminders.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Carlingford Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like James Ruse Agricultural High School.
