Have patience, and also confidence in your student. Additionally, encouragement and enthusiasm. Encouragement and belief in the student goes a long way, as I believe some students don't even believe in themselves I believe I have great communication skills as well as a very calm and patient temperament. I have always enjoyed being a leader and…

A tutor straddles the line between teacher and friend, and they are often closer in age to their students, making them more relatable and more likely to help their students get comfortable. A tutor's unique position could add a new dimension to a student’s learning, as they can receive guidance from someone who is both relatable but also…

To make them confident enough. To listen to them. To teach them right or wrong. To help them with understanding the concept not just memorising or ratification. I think it would be the unlimited support and confidence the tutor has for their student as well as their passion for their subject they are teaching. If the student feels like their tutor listens to them and has confidence in their potential, then in due time, the student will likely flourish and develop their abilities. A lot of the time…

I think patience is the biggest key factor as without that there can be no way a tutor could help a student. Learning new things can be tricky and scary which is why a tutor must be able to understand a student's learning pace, be able to communicate thoroughly and also make the learning experience a fun one I am a very patient person which I…

A tutor should give attention to her student as most of them work more if you recognize and praise them on their achievement. The simple things like greeting and smile are as important to light up their day. A tutor should be able to boost the confidence level of the students and make it easier for students to understand. My strengths include my…

Most tutors focus on the academic side of things for a student without catering specifically to the child's needs. Each child is different and I believe that teaching methods has to be adjusted accordingly. Even the pace of teaching is crucial as students not understanding the concept makes the whole tutoring session irrelevant. I am a out-going,…

For me, the most important thing a tutor can do for his student, is to make the latter find himself. This means that the tutor should first teach him how to learn, make him find ways/conditions in which he thrives the most. I believe that if the student manages to unlock that skill, irrespective of the subject, the sky is the limit for the…

A tutor should also…

I believe that the most important thing a tutor can do is to help students help themselves, or to assist or guide them so that they become independent learners. Inside CarlisleTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Ava practised multiplying and dividing mixed fractions, along with converting between decimals, percentages, and fractions.

In Year 8, Mia focused on factorising algebraic expressions and worked through simultaneous equations using both substitution and elimination methods.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Lucas reviewed trigonometry by solving for unknown angles in right-angled triangles and revised the use of Pythagoras' theorem with practice questions.

Recent Challenges

A Year 11 Chemistry student found it challenging to identify unknowns during assessment prep, needing extra time to memorise her plan—she will also be memorising her plan for her assessment, noted the tutor.

Meanwhile, a Year 8 student's incomplete notes on biology cycles meant confusion when revising key processes.

In Year 3 maths, messy working and reliance on blocks slowed progress in subtraction; skipping pen-and-paper practice made online lessons less effective for another student.

For a senior accounting task, overuse of the calculator hid gaps in understanding worded finance questions, leaving some answers unexplained during revision sessions.

Recent Achievements

One Carlisle tutor recently noticed a Year 10 student who used to get stuck on trigonometry now confidently chooses the right rule for finding unknown angles, needing far less prompting than before.

In Year 12 Chemistry, a student who was previously unsure about planning investigations can now lay out steps to identify unknowns and solve simple problems mostly unaided.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 learner who often guessed answers has started asking for help when needed—last session, she explained her thinking during a fractions task instead of staying quiet or rushing through mistakes.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Victoria Park Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Carlisle Primary School.
