I consider the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to listen to them and work with them, not at them. Tutoring for me is not just about regurgitating the same things as their classroom teacher, especially if it is a student who is struggling and the classroom approach is not working for them. I tutor in a way to make the student…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to listen and be empathetic because a good tutor-student relationship is the key to long-term academic and professional success; for both tutor and student. Being a good listener and empath allows a tutor to then move onto other important things like understanding the student’s…

A tutor apart from offering services of tutorship has a huge impact a student's life in the following ways: 1. Encourage students to apply his/her independent mind and motivate them to think out of the box. 2. Go out of the way in exploring different options to teach the same course/study material. 3. Be available for your students and…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is simply be open to answer any questions a student might have. They need to be able to grasp the entire concept so that it can be applied in their school work. My strengths as a tutor could be my patience and my willingness to go out of my way to help any student I can. I think I also have a…

A tutor is a role model and a figure for their students and it plays an important role to know them well. As a teacher role, it is important to remember being flexible, kind, gentle, and patience towards the child that we are teaching. Therefore, a child can get connected with the tutor and they learn at a faster rate. My biggest strength is that…

A tutor is someone who can help to support and strengthen students' self-efficacy one-on-one. This is extremely important as classroom teachers have to manage multiple students in a classroom and cannot provide the same undivided attention as a tutor can. Tutors instil confidence in their students, assist them in unpacking and understanding areas…

I believe the most valuable tutors to students are those that are able to place themselves in the minds of their students. If I was a 15 year old beginning to learn the basics of calculus for example, I would consider which fundamentals they must first learn to gain a solid and sound foundation before moving onto more difficult components. I…

Inside Carlton NorthTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Dylan worked through simplifying and calculating surds, including addition, subtraction, multiplication and division using homework examples.

For Year 10, Favour practised solving simultaneous equations and tackled linear graphs word problems.

Meanwhile, Queen (Year 10) focused on applying linear equations to solve worded questions involving real-life scenarios and reinforced her skills with extra practice from homework exercises.

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 student did not complete assigned homework, which meant less time reinforcing word problem strategies and missed chances to clarify errors.

In Year 10 algebra, skipping written working led to "small mistakes trying to solve in his head instead of using the paper."

For a senior student, messy or incomplete notes in calculus made back-checking difficult—one tutor observed, "she struggled recalling formulae under timed conditions because her notes were disorganized."

Meanwhile, a Year 5 student hesitated to explain steps aloud during fractions work; this avoidance made it harder to spot where confusion began.

Missed practice and incomplete written working often left gaps visible only at assessment time.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Carlton North noticed some genuine breakthroughs recently. One Year 11 student who previously hesitated with VCE statistics questions has started working through past exam problems independently, showing strong problem-solving skills and taking real initiative after just a few sessions.

In another case, a Year 9 student who used to struggle with interpreting information from Venn diagrams was able to confidently explain her reasoning out loud and even picked up on her own mistakes using back-checking strategies.

Meanwhile, a primary school student now tackles word problems with much more confidence than before, completing all the set tasks without prompting.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Carlton Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Princes Hill Primary School.
