I think creating a supportive learning environment is very important as it will slowly build their confidence and not make them want to give up. Along with my problem-solving skills, my deeper understanding of the subjects is important for my student as well. I have strong communication skills which allow me to engage with students, making their…

A tutor should offer an individualised teaching method that works to that student's strengths and takes into account any weaknesses. Whether that mean explaining new concepts in more engaging ways or focusing on certain aspects that a student is finding particularly difficult to grasp. A tutor should also help students feel more confident in their…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to teach them how to study and learn properly, as it then gives them the ability to use that skill outside of tutoring sessions and greatly improve their grades as well as their academic confidence. Another thing I believe to be important is making the learning experience as…

As a tutor, I believe the most important thing is to help one who helps others to digest concepts and knowledge in an interactive and friendly environment while retaining their interest to study the knowledge. Also, I am also the one who analyse knowledge and mistake and seeks improvement in the exam preparation period, as I would help the student…

Most students struggle to gain confidence in solving problems which in turn leads them to be unmotivated to study. Therefore, I believe that tutoring is not just teaching concepts but also building an environment where students feel comfortable to make mistakes and learn from it. From experience, I believe that the most effective way is to…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do for a student, specifically in maths, is to identify and remedy any gaps in knowledge (unknown to the student) that are prerequisites for understanding a topic. I believe my strengths are mathematical maturity, compassion, and my easy-going attitude. These allow me to understand a student's…

A tutor can be a role model for the student. Generally students observe character and skills of a tutor and in most cases they try to imitate them. As a tutor we have to be a responsible individual gradually transferring our personality to aspiring students. After all today's students are tommorrow's mentors. I think my determination and my…

One of the most damaging things one can do as a tutor is establish a blind hierarchy with their student. A tutor does not impart facts and knowledge, he or she attempts to come, along with the student, to a mutual understanding of a concept and I find that much more constructive if you approach this from a peer perspective rather than an…

Well, I think tutoring a student is like a therapy session where you can guide them in the right path, teach them different approaches with which they can study, boost their confidence when in doubt, help them explore varied dynamics of a subject and make them self reliant for future. So the next time a student finds any subject difficult they…

In general, I believe that the best way to teach Maths/Science is in a way which the student understands the concepts rather than just giving the student a method to produce an answer, which is how these subjects are commonly taught. 1. I am self-directed, energetic, and enthusiastic. I have completed my Bachelor of Engineering + Management…

A tutor should first of all help the student to build his self-confidence and self-esteem. Appreciating small efforts and hard work of the student will allow him to be more confident and continue working in that direction. This will help him not only academically but also in later stages of life where he will learn the importance of perseverance…

A believe an effective tutor will support a student in a way that will eventually leave them comfortable, confident and prepared enough to no longer need the help of a tutor. However, I understand that this process may be a matter of weeks for some students and a matter of years for others. I think being a good tutor relies upon a variety of…

One of the main roles of a tutor is to support their student's learning and understanding. As a tutor, it is not only important to provide as much assistance and help as possible, but also to encourage them to think independently. By thoroughly explaining the concepts to them in a fun and engaging manner, they will develop a deeper appreciation…

A tutor should always motivate a student even if he/she is not performing well. A tutor should identify the strength of the student and work accordingly. I have worked as a teacher also in one of the IB school in India. For the first six months I worked in an Additional learning support department where I learnt about differentiated teaching and…

Inside Carlton NorthTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Dylan worked through simplifying and calculating surds, including addition, subtraction, multiplication and division using homework examples.

For Year 10, Favour practised solving simultaneous equations and tackled linear graphs word problems.

Meanwhile, Queen (Year 10) focused on applying linear equations to solve worded questions involving real-life scenarios and reinforced her skills with extra practice from homework exercises.

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 student did not complete assigned homework, which meant less time reinforcing word problem strategies and missed chances to clarify errors.

In Year 10 algebra, skipping written working led to "small mistakes trying to solve in his head instead of using the paper."

For a senior student, messy or incomplete notes in calculus made back-checking difficult—one tutor observed, "she struggled recalling formulae under timed conditions because her notes were disorganized."

Meanwhile, a Year 5 student hesitated to explain steps aloud during fractions work; this avoidance made it harder to spot where confusion began.

Missed practice and incomplete written working often left gaps visible only at assessment time.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Carlton North noticed some genuine breakthroughs recently. One Year 11 student who previously hesitated with VCE statistics questions has started working through past exam problems independently, showing strong problem-solving skills and taking real initiative after just a few sessions.

In another case, a Year 9 student who used to struggle with interpreting information from Venn diagrams was able to confidently explain her reasoning out loud and even picked up on her own mistakes using back-checking strategies.

Meanwhile, a primary school student now tackles word problems with much more confidence than before, completing all the set tasks without prompting.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Carlton Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Princes Hill Primary School.
