Help the student visualise or truly understand the concept instead of having to memorise the equations. If a student understands the concept, it could become intuitive for the student to know how to use the equation. One other important thing a tutor can do for a student is to be encouraging and empathetic, build the student's confidence and…

A tutor should help students develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills so they can tackle future challenges independently. Help the student overcome their fear, and develop new skills to improve and work on their weaknesses. Try to seek help when they need it and learn how to deal with new challenges everyday without fear. Communication is the key for everything. And I’m easy going with people and I’m also easy to share things with. So I believe the boy/girl…

The most important thing a tutor can do for their student is ensure the student understands the content, and doesn't just get the marks if they don't understand the content properly. They also need to be someone who the student can feel comfortable talking to and asking questions, regardless of how 'silly' the question may seem. Good communication…

Education involves more than just sitting through and able to understand the lessons. Building a good connection will allow the tutor to give the students a more enjoyable and engaging lesson. After establishing a good…

Rather than simply giving them answers, I want to help students understand why a method works, recognise where they are struggling and develop strategies for approaching unfamiliar problems. A tutor should build the student's confidence as a student shouldn't ever feel doubtful about themselves before learning. They should communicate understanding what specific things they're struggling with. Patience is important you can't rush teaching any concept to a student. Holding students accountable is important since a student should also…

You can inspire a student and make him independent. The goal of a teacher (ironically) is to make himself redundant. Being able to develop self-learning skills and teaching oneself by asking right questions is the key process of learning. Eventually, you can master the art of learning itself and you don't need a teacher. I can be very friendly and…

To be attentive and to address the students personal needs for growth. The tutor should set an ideal example in terms of behaviour motivation and actions- one which a student should be able to look up to but also resonate with. This allows him to engage with the student at a personal level and provide better more relatable academic support, but…

Self esteem. When a student can solve maths problem and they comprehend the concept behind it, it gives them confidence that they could do anything. Confidence is an important factor in maximizing the potential of an individual. I think most students right now approach solvining maths problem in a very mechanical way. Meaning , they memorize the…

Inside Castle HillTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 10 student Mia worked through past paper questions on quadratic equations and extended her skills with logarithms.

For Year 9, Ethan focused on coordinate geometry problems and applied the sine and cosine rule to find unknown lengths using diagrams.

Meanwhile, Year 8 student Priya practiced adding, subtracting, multiplying, and simplifying fractions before tackling similar triangles and basic trigonometric ratios.

Recent Challenges

In Year 10, a student tackling advanced index laws and coordinate geometry sometimes left challenging assignment questions incomplete, as seen when "did not go through the entire paper, but will do that next week."

In Year 8 algebra work, there was a pattern of not writing all steps—missing signs or mixing up operations—which made error-spotting harder ("needs to know the difference between multiplying and adding algebraic terms").

Meanwhile, in Year 12 annuities lessons, notes flagged an over-reliance on supplied worksheets rather than independent revision. This led to slower progress when faced with less familiar exam-style questions.

Recent Achievements

A Castle Hill tutor recently noticed a big shift in a Year 11 student who had struggled with financial maths; she managed to complete the hardest questions on her own after previously hesitating to even attempt them.

In another session, a Year 9 student who used to make frequent mistakes with indices started catching these errors herself and began asking for clarification when confused instead of just moving on.

Meanwhile, a younger student finally tackled dividing large numbers by learning a new method, after weeks of feeling stuck. At the end of his lesson, he chose extra practice problems without prompting.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Baulkham Hills Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Hills Adventist College, Castle Hill Campus.
