The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to allow the student to enjoy the process of learning the material. To me, if a tutor is able to create an environment that is enjoyable as well as make the learning process enjoyable it can help the student to improve a lot quicker as they are enjoying the process more. My strongest…

I believe tutors exist to help extend the foundations of what students are taught in schools, whether it be through analysing old concepts with a finer view or reinforcing newer concepts with carefully selected examples and analogies. I believe I am quite capable of exercising patience when a student is trying to understand the subject, trying to…

Being patient. A lot of teachers get frustrated when students do not understand concepts the way they teach them. It is important to teach every student in their own way and be patient with the teaching process. Otherwise a student's confidence and motivation to learn is harmed. My biggest strength would be communication. I am adept at explaining…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is recognise what, precisely, the student is struggling with and to tailor explanations of concepts in ways that the student will respond to. For example, a major conceptual hurdle for high school students can be learning about logarithms for the first time. Often the root of confusion…

The most important things that a tutor can do for a student is to be reliable, knowledgable and help the student reach and exceed their expectations. Also to be able to teach content in a way that makes learning fun and enjoyable is critical to a student's learning capacity. It is most important for a tutor to engage with the student, so that they will be more inclined to be attentive and take the lessons seriously. It is also neccesary to make the neccesary preperations required for the student, e.g background research for foreign topics/ or remodled questions, to suit the student's needs and allow for efficient…

Change in accordance to what a student expresses. No one likes to be feel or be stated as dumb, a tutor should be a guide more than an instructor. Meet them where they are, not where you expect them to be. A lot of students come in already feeling like they're bad at the subject, so the priority is rebuilding their confidence first. Getting the right answer matters, but getting the student to believe they can get the right answer matters more. My maths background gives me a strong command of…

Inside CheltenhamTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 10 Jack reviewed Ohm's Law and the differences between series and parallel electric circuits, also addressing questions from his school work.

For Year 11 Mia, lessons focused on algebraic factorisation of linear expressions and coordinate geometry—calculating midpoints, gradients, and distances between two points.

Meanwhile, Year 11 Olivia worked through exam revision covering quadratic equations, probability problems, graphing equations, and aspects of financial mathematics.

Recent Challenges

A Year 3 student found aligning number places in decimal calculations confusing, particularly when working on clock questions—her written layout sometimes made it hard to check work for errors.

In Year 8, one student often relied heavily on notes and formula sheets during revision; he wasn't able to do some of the revision questions without looking at his notes, which slowed progress with algebra and indices.

Meanwhile, a Year 11 student had incomplete homework in statistics, meaning less time could be spent practicing exam-style problems. Gaps from missing or late schoolwork lingered into revision sessions, especially before assessments.

Recent Achievements

One Cheltenham tutor noted a big shift in a Year 10 student who, after previously hesitating to ask for help, now openly voices questions whenever she's confused—especially during challenging proofs.

In Year 12 maths, Levi struggled with expanding and factorising equations at first, but recently completed all set problems independently and accurately.

Meanwhile, a younger student in primary years, who found division daunting before, has started grouping objects into sets using diagrams and then confidently writing out the matching equation without prompting—something she would have avoided just weeks ago.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Epping Branch Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Epping Heights Public School.
