A tutor can encourage a student to better themselves, to reach simple goals and then challenge them further to be the best. I feel achieved when the student starts asking complex question as the day passes by, to the point where you have to give the answer a second thought. And that is when I know i have achieved being an excellent tutor. I…

Make the student love the subject. There are many ways varying from a student to the other. If a student falls in love with the subject, he will comprehend it, not just learn it. I started tutoring when i was in undergraduate to my own class fellows and that was in 2002. With such a vast experience i have amazing teaching skills built-in…

I think the most important things a tutor can do are to make learning feel simple, build the student's confidence, and support them at their own pace. A good tutor listens, explains concepts in different ways, and creates a safe space where the student feels comfortable asking questions and making mistakes. One of my strengths as a tutor is that I…

Tutor can be patient with their student and let them learn at their pace. Also, I believe a tutor should NEVER spoon fed but rather act like a mentor, guiding and helping if and only where it is required. I have rarely ever used the same method of explaining a concept/theory on multiple students. It is really important for tutors to understand the needs and abilities of their students in order to maintain progress. It is also crucial for tutors to have time-management and resourceful qualities in order to ensure academic development in students.…

To create a supportive, encouraging environment where they feel safe to make mistakes and grow. Human connection is the foundation of effective learning. Genuinely understanding the students need and tailoring the best approach of teaching accordingly is the best thing a tutor can do. A tutor needs to inspire the students in such a way that they know what their efforts will make them accomplish. The most important thing is identifying strengths, weaknesses and comfort zone of the student. The teacher in the comfort zone of student should help student work on his weaknesses and help the student identify his own strengths/passion and help him pursue it. It is important to raise the student's interest in study as interest is the premise for the student to invest time and effort. What is also important is that the tutor teach the student approaches and techniques to study, not only what's in the textbook. I also consider it prudent for tutors to have patience with students and to be…

Inside CheltenhamTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 10 Jack reviewed Ohm's Law and the differences between series and parallel electric circuits, also addressing questions from his school work.

For Year 11 Mia, lessons focused on algebraic factorisation of linear expressions and coordinate geometry—calculating midpoints, gradients, and distances between two points.

Meanwhile, Year 11 Olivia worked through exam revision covering quadratic equations, probability problems, graphing equations, and aspects of financial mathematics.

Recent Challenges

A Year 3 student found aligning number places in decimal calculations confusing, particularly when working on clock questions—her written layout sometimes made it hard to check work for errors.

In Year 8, one student often relied heavily on notes and formula sheets during revision; he wasn't able to do some of the revision questions without looking at his notes, which slowed progress with algebra and indices.

Meanwhile, a Year 11 student had incomplete homework in statistics, meaning less time could be spent practicing exam-style problems. Gaps from missing or late schoolwork lingered into revision sessions, especially before assessments.

Recent Achievements

One Cheltenham tutor noted a big shift in a Year 10 student who, after previously hesitating to ask for help, now openly voices questions whenever she's confused—especially during challenging proofs.

In Year 12 maths, Levi struggled with expanding and factorising equations at first, but recently completed all set problems independently and accurately.

Meanwhile, a younger student in primary years, who found division daunting before, has started grouping objects into sets using diagrams and then confidently writing out the matching equation without prompting—something she would have avoided just weeks ago.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Epping Branch Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Epping Heights Public School.
