A tutor should be understanding of their students' learning and study patterns and help them in a way that will benefit their students the most. A tutor should personally support and encourage their student to become more confident in themselves and their study areas alongside explaining content. I am able to use a range of different explaining…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is not only explain an answer to a student, but actually make sure that they understand how the answer is derived and can do it themselves. There is no point in rote learning something when you can understand how an answer comes to be. As Albert Einstein said, 'Education is not the learning of…

I think a tutor must be understanding and helpful. Finding innovative ways to teach and repeat the same concept. If the teacher teaches the student something and I as the tutor say the same thing, there is no understanding that would be gained. It is important to understand exactly what the student is not clear or sure about and clear those doubts…

I feel that a tutor must build strong relationships with their students in order to understand their strengths and weakness and also for the student to be comfortable with their tutors. Moreover, they must be patient with their students, because tutoring is not an easy job. In addition. I have struggled a lot during Middle and High school in…

A tutor is not just someone whose only job is to formally teach a student. A student needs a true mentor and guide just as much as he needs a teacher. This is where an actual tutor's true responsibility comes to play. As someone who was in a high school student very recently, I am well aware of the problems students actually face. Whether it…

Impart knowledge and methods for learning. Aiding them in their learning methods would benefit them more than just imparting knowledge. Helping them improve their learning methods would serve them better in the future. As a current student, I still experience the struggle to learn and internalize the subject material and will be able to empathize…

I believe that the best thing that a tutor can do for a student is to provide them with the self-confidence and self-belief to persevere through any difficulties they may face in their academics. This can be done through the gradual withdrawal of support as the student grows in their skills and confidence. Once the student has established their…

Understanding their perspective and finding the best way to explain concepts in a way that resonates with them is key to fostering growth and confidence in their learning journey. My…

The most important things a tutor can do for a student is to help them become more independent and confident with the subject material. If a tutor can encourage students when they are finding the problems difficult and explain the material to them so they can consolidate and establish the skills so they could teach it to others, then I think the…

I think the most important things a tutor can do is to conceptualise the content so that they can easily grasp the subject and work together with the student to deepen their understanding. Another important thing is to be easily available. it is important that tutors are available when the student needs it most in their schooling schedule; this…

Foremost, a tutor should help their student to identify and reach their goals. Knowing what is important to the student and incorporating that into the metrics for success will help them feel like they are making progress. And secondly, tutors should help the student to form good habits; as motivation can only take one so far, incorporating a good…

A tutor should be extremely caring when it comes to their students. Often, especially kids, are afraid to ask tutors questions at the risk of "sounding dumb". I believe it is the tutor's foremost responsibility to assure the students that learning is for everyone, and they are not alone when facing that doubt. Perseverance, organisation, patience,…

Each student learns in a unique way and at a different pace and thus a good tutor must understand this and personalise their learning. Alongside this, the tutor must focus on building the student's confidence and teaching to their strengths before wandering into waters unfamiliar to the student. Inside ClaytonTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Lucy worked through surface area and volume calculations in measurement, followed by trigonometry basics using visual aids.

For Year 10, Daniel focused on mastering linear equations and interpreting univariate data sets, with practice constructing and analysing graphs.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Sarah concentrated on bivariate data analysis and time series interpretation, applying these skills to real-world scenarios in her textbook exercises.

Recent Challenges

In Year 10 Maths, a student left notes at school and relied on scattered digital files during finance revision; as the tutor observed, "he was flipping through pages to find a particular formula," which slowed progress and caused confusion with recurrence relations.

For VCE Maths Methods, another student frequently entered incorrect data into the CAS calculator or forgot to bring it home for practice, leading to incomplete preparation for graphing tasks.

Meanwhile, in Year 3 English, unclear punctuation and skipping question instructions—such as colouring more items than asked—created repeated misunderstandings mid-lesson that disrupted focus and accuracy.

Recent Achievements

One Clayton tutor recently noticed a big shift in a Year 10 student who now takes the lead in making clear, simplified notes during sessions—something he rarely attempted before—which has helped him remember key trigonometry tips from previous lessons.

In a senior session, another student tackled her Statistics test with noticeably more confidence, scoring 86 after consistently struggling on earlier assessments and using her calculator skills much more independently this time.

Meanwhile, a younger student surprised his tutor by speaking up to ask for extra explanations about converting length units, rather than waiting passively as he had done at first.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Clayton Branch Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Peter's School.
