Beyond simply helping a student improve their grades, I believe a tutor should aim to further engage their students in their learning and to actively enjoy school. It's one thing to explain to a student how to approach concepts and assessment tasks, but to actively encourage them to love school is something that separates a good tutor from a…

Supporting the student and building their confidence is very important, as the belief that you are capable and have a strong grasp of the material is essential to success. I will also take the time to communicate with the student to develop a study plan that is suited to their level and leans on their strengths. My strengths are in English,…

I believe that cultivating critical thinking skills, problem-solving abilities, and a growth mindset are important. A tutor should inspire curiosity, instill confidence, and equip students with the tools they need to become independent learners. Moreover, fostering a positive and supportive relationship built on trust and mutual respect is…

The most important thing any sort of teacher or mentor can do for not just students, but anyone, is to make sure the students believe in themselves and their abilities, for that will take them beyond any test or assignment. What is also important is to make sure the students have fun while learning, for that will ensure that whatever they are…

Be honest. This helps to establish rapport and trust, the two most critical elements to a successful tutoring relationship. Be flexible. This means being willing to adjust techniques and approaches to meet the learning styles of the student. Be patient. What is obvious or easy for you may not be so for your student. Learn not to show annoyance…

A tutor can be a role model for the student. Generally students observe character and skills of a tutor and in most cases they try to imitate them. As a tutor we have to be a responsible individual gradually transferring our personality to aspiring students. After all today's students are tommorrow's mentors. I think my determination and my…

Rather than provide a mass amount of information, the most important thing that a tutor can do for a student is instil a sense of confidence and interest in the subject. Personally the experiences that I have taken with me from systems of education have been how applicable the framework of learning is to other facets of the reasoning process.…

I am patient with the students and I can work through many examples with the student until he…

I would say to keep the student intersted and excited about learning. You have them invested in the subject and half your job is done. Teaching doesnt have to be monotonous, mundane and boring. I am smart, young and very well spoken. I speak from a place of confidence and can be very entertaining for kids/youth. I would like to think I am quite…

Being patient and having an attentive ear so that a student can build confidence in asking questions. Explaining the concepts clearly by adapting to each child's learning style is also important. A tutor should try to think like a student tutor should try to get into the child’s mind, mostly a tutor should try to bend according to the child’s need because if a tutor is just like a machine then they won’t be able to critically analyse where the child is unable to grasp the knowledge so it’s very very important that a tutor should…

I think that being patient and empathetic are two of the most important things a tutor can do for a student. Listening empathetically to a student can help a tutor to understand the way that the student thinks. In turn, the student feels understood and real improvements can be made. The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to clear the concepts. If a student knows the concept well then he/she can apply it to any problem pertaining to a particular topic. A tutor can do this by giving real world examples and discussing about the topic in general. Math is one of the most fun subjects to learn if one understands…

Inside Clifton HillTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 10 student Amber revised the quadratic formula and how to use the discriminant to determine the nature of roots, then practiced applying these skills to worded problems.

For Year 11, Olivia focused on factorising cubic polynomials as well as reviewing errors from her recent test using worked examples.

Meanwhile, Year 12 student Ethan tackled logarithms and converting numbers to significant figures, with a focus on interpreting exam-style questions.

Recent Challenges

In Year 9 maths, one student often skipped showing working for algebra and graphing questions—"she tried to do it all in her head," a tutor observed, which led to hidden sign errors that took time to find.

A Year 11 student tended to rush through extended response problems, not checking answers or units, so minor mistakes crept into exam-style practice.

Meanwhile, a Year 6 student regularly doubted his answers and avoided attempting unfamiliar tasks unless shown an example first; this hesitancy slowed progress with fractions and statistics, leaving him uncertain about next steps when working alone.

Recent Achievements

One Clifton Hill tutor recently noticed a big shift in a Year 10 student who used to avoid asking for help—now, he actively requests clarification when stuck, even asking for instructions to be repeated until he's sure, instead of waiting passively.

In senior English, another high schooler brought a list of specific questions she'd struggled with and worked through each one independently, showing far more ownership over her learning than before.

Meanwhile, a younger student who was initially reluctant about long division ended up finishing challenging multiplication problems with 7s, 8s, and 9s quickly and accurately by the end of the session.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as North Fitzroy Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Clifton Hill Primary School.
