I think the key thing a tutor can do for a student is ensure that their individual learning habits are in order, creating an essential degree of independence. I have found it extremely valuable to ensure students develop a solid work ethic and understand how they can study effectively. In this sense tutoring plays a supplementary role, ensuring…

Patience and not comparing them with the others. I believe that each student has their own pace of learning. Lack of patience and comparing them with others will certainly hamper their learning process and will give them less confidence on their studies. Understanding the most effective way of learning for each student is also crucial. When I was…

I believe being a tutor is about teaching a student from their level. My ability to approach the problem from the a student's perspective and teach them the concepts and patterns required to solve the problem. I am patient and understand that each student learns differently and with that mindset my goal is to teach my students the concepts they…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is being prepared. I have had 1-1 Spanish tutoring in the past, and every week my tutor would arrive prepared with documents and interactive lessons, which were fundamental in enriching my learning of the subject and making the sessions more enjoyable. Additionally, the tutor needs to maintain…

My philosophy as a tutor revolves around three fundamental principles: patience, care, and clarity. Patience is at the heart of my teaching approach. I believe that learning isn't about rushing through content, but about facilitating comprehension at each student's pace. My mission goes beyond delivering lectures - I am committed to ensuring…

Personal relationships are foundational to student success -- the more connected a student feels to his or her tutor, the more the tutor creates trust and respect, essential ingredients for students to learn well. The most important thing is to make sure that the student doesn't feel overwhelmed with their workload, and instead has fun (or at least doesn't detest the time spent) while studying. In this regard, the tutor has to make the content interesting and tailor it to each individual if it's one-on-one. I'm very patient in explaining concepts. I also…

The most important thing a math tutor can do for a student is help them build confidence. From my experience, most students understand math but are afraid of it. Being scared of math makes it more likely for students to make mistakes. My HSC maths teacher used to say that to be able to understand mathematics, one must understand the basics of it…

The most important things a tutor can do is provide a support network and assistance for the students both in and outside of academics. A tutor can transform a student's life by helping them become more confident in their academic career, which inevitably improves general confidence. Further, a tutor provides mentoring and coaching as experts in their field which a student can carry with them beyond school, ensuring they are set up for success in their chosen field. I believe a…

Inside ClovellyTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Oliver focused on converting between decimals and fractions as well as simplifying mixed and improper fractions.

For Year 9, Ava worked through compound interest calculations and compared simple versus compound investments using value tables.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Jack tackled factorisation methods in algebra along with more complex problems involving addition and subtraction of fractions by applying factorisation strategies.

Recent Challenges

A Year 9 student tackling trigonometry found multi-step sine and cosine rule questions challenging when working alone; the tutor noted, "he needed guidance to find relevant angles," revealing a struggle to persist through complex problems without support.

In Year 11 Maths, worded income tax and commission problems proved overwhelming—questions with dense text led to missed steps and confusion.

Meanwhile, a Year 6 student's written work remained difficult to follow due to unorganized note-taking in probability tasks: "notes were scattered across the page."

Not putting pen to paper during homework left gaps that made it tough for tutors to pinpoint sources of confusion.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Clovelly noticed a Year 9 student who used to avoid asking for help now openly requests clarification when stuck, especially with factorisation questions—an important shift from silent guessing.

In Year 11, one student recently corrected their own homework errors after carefully reviewing feedback, showing genuine independence that wasn't there before.

Meanwhile, a Year 5 learner who had struggled with long division earlier in the year has begun explaining solution steps out loud while working through problems and now completes them confidently without guidance. Last session, they finished an entire worksheet alone.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Randwick Branch Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Anthony's Catholic Primary School.
