I think it is important not letting them hate the study, but with a good attitude with self-driven studying in the future, from university to workplace, I hope they can find study is interesting and they are willing to put efforts to achieve their goals The topic I know for teenager is a lot, I know different kinds of game and fandom that nowaday…

I am very patient and willing to take things at what ever pace is required for the child to reach their learning potential. I enjoy working with children and I am a keen learner…

I think one of the most important traits a tutor needs is patience. It is not helpful to make the student feel stupid or inadequate and of course each student is unique and learns at a different pace. Patience is pivotal to make the student feel like it is a safe space to ask questions, be willing to rephrase concepts until they understand and…

I feel that as tutor, we change the student's perspective towards challenges. Subjects and topics become obstacles to overcome instead of impossible challenges. By assisting student's understanding and nudging them towards the right steps to conquer complicated equations or decipher Shakespeare, we unlock a further interest in genuinely…

I think the most important thing for a tutor to do is to link the subject to individual student interest, as students (in my experience) have much better learning outcomes when they are engaged in the content and intrinsically motivated by some aspect of the question/subject. I think my strengths as a tutor is my ability to provide explanations…

To ensure a student can be tutored effectively, they have to feel open about discussing topics and concepts they do not understand well which can be daunting. Thus, by maintaining a friendly and welcoming personality and relationship as a tutor, students are able to be more open about their weaknesses, allowing for me to tailor myself to their…

To believe in them! To recognise strengths and areas to improve, then encourage, nurture and help them to achieve. It is crucial that a tutor be patient with students and understanding of their learning background. A tutor also has to be flexible and attentive to their students to know when one approach to a subject is not working for them or another is needed. My most useful strength as a tutor that I have developed while working at a tutoring center is…

One of the most important skills I believe a tutor can develop is the art of explaining material in different ways. Often, when students struggle to understand some concept, explaining the material in the same way repeatedly does not help. The key then is to try approaching the material in different ways until the student can grasp it. Past tutees…

I think building confidence is the biggest thing a tutor can teach. Every student has the capability to excel but it starts with believing that they can do it, once the tutor helps the student build confidence, learning the details of a subject is the easy part. I am very patient and confident with my knowledge of a subject, as well as being good…

I believe the most important things a tutor can do for a student is to challenge yet support them in their studies. By challenging the student to do better, yet simultaneously reminding them that it is okay to fail, the student will feel inspired enough to try. Furthermore, it is extremely important to build a personal relationship with the…

To give to the student not only the knowledge of how a task is completed or formula applied, but an understanding of the logic in why this is utilised or possible. The ability to apply mathematics to a situation through the correct understanding of what needs to be done and what knowledge can be used to accomplish that end, is more necessary and…

I believe the most important aspect of being a tutor, is being a collaborator. Rather than giving the student the answers, it should be treated as a partnership in which you guide them on how to learn themselves and act as a dependable figure to show they're not alone in their experiences. Inside Collaroy PlateauTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Lily practised times tables, addition, and subtraction through homework tasks, as well as tackling word problems for improved comprehension.

For Year 9, Ben worked on complex area calculations involving circles and irregular shapes, alongside solving inequalities with step-by-step guidance.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student James focused on linear functions and applying key formulas for lines to consolidate understanding ahead of his assessment.

Recent Challenges

In Year 9 algebra, skipping steps when expanding and simplifying led to missed sign errors—one tutor noted, "he skipped showing steps in algebra, which hid sign errors."

In senior mathematics, exam nerves caused a student to avoid reviewing working, so mistakes in inverse graph questions were left uncorrected.

Meanwhile, a Year 6 student's heavy reliance on finger counting for times tables slowed her progress with division and multiplication; switching between coloured pens during working out also distracted from focusing on the maths itself.

For one Year 11 project, online research wasn't clearly translated into presentation format, resulting in incomplete preparation.

Recent Achievements

One Collaroy Plateau tutor noticed a Year 9 student who had previously hesitated to ask questions now actively seeking clarification on complex area problems, even attempting inequalities independently after guidance.

In a recent high school session, another student who often guessed at answers started breaking down algebraic equations step by step, clearly articulating where they'd made mistakes and adjusting their approach without prompting.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 learner who struggled with multiplication tables began using card games to practise and was soon splitting tougher multiples into manageable parts—completing her twelve times tables challenge with no hints needed.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Dee Why Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Collaroy Plateau Public School.
