The most important things an english tutor can do for a student is to adapt to their learning style and to be supportive. Not every student can be taught using the same plan, and it is necessary to change when needed so that a student can be successful. If a student needs a range of scenarios so that they can clearly understand the topic, it…

I believe the most important things an english tutor can do are to explain concepts clearly, adapt to each student’s learning style, and provide encouragement that builds confidence. A good tutor should be patient and supportive, helping students feel comfortable asking questions while also guiding them to think independently. Tutoring is not…

While I believe it is obviously important to help a student learn and understand their chosen subject, it is also important to support and encourage confidence in a student. I found during my schooling years that the subjects I most succeeded in were ones where my teachers were kind and encouraging - it allowed me to feel comfortable to ask…

1. Patience as every student has different levels of needs 2. Positive words: having treated my student(s) as my younger brother(s)/sister(s), I only pursue the best to them even if circumstances (grades/scores/situations) are not in their favor, I have never used the word "fail". 3.) Balance love with goals. Hence, strictness. 4.) Aside from…

I believe as an english tutor, taking the time to truly understand my students, including their motivations, life story, personality, goals, dreams, and setbacks, is the most critical and important thing I can do. Having traits of consistency, professionalism, adaptability, empathy and understanding of students will best allow me to encourage and…

The most important thing an english tutor can do for a student is to remember their position when they were at their student's age, the difficulties they faced while learning and sharing their experiences with passion to their students so they do not have to face such difficulties while learning. A tutor should treat every students equally. Motivate slow learners and help them improve their learning. Patience is very important and never get angry repeating the same response for those who have trouble grasping the concept. Ready to lend ears to their queries. Make learning easier so that they can enjoy learning. I have always noticed myself…

A tutor must be patient as well as motivating for their students. They must be organised and have a well structured plan to support their students while still being open to their ideas and opinions. The tutors must also be good problem solvers in order to assist students with their studies. An effective tutor will always encourage independence and…

A tutor can provide personalised teaching to students that would not be available in a big classroom environment. A tutor also provides a safe space for students free of judgement where they can ask questions they might not get the chance to ask in class. Tutors also relate to the students and instill a level of confidence that truly improves…

One of the most important things an english tutor can do for a student is to provide understanding and gentle encouragement. It has been my experience that, if a student feels like the work is overwhelming and the teacher isn't listening, then the student will simply cease to care or give up. Listening to a student and helping them to work through…

Being able to understand how much a student can handle without overwhelming them, keeping lessons engaging so the student does not lose interest in the subject, and not demeaning a student for not understanding topics that may be conventionally 'easy' as it may likely discourage the student - these are a few of the most important principles an…

The most important thing an english tutor can give to his/her student is confidence. The confidence to know that whatever the problem is. There is no point trying to avoid it when if you work hard enough and practice enough with the right help, you will be able to solve problems on your own. Eventually the student does not need the tutor as a…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to not spoon feed information, its the art of teaching the child to a degree where it helps them but doesnt answer the entire thing. Spoon feeding a student will only help temporarily and is very harmful. I believe my strengths are that i dont like to teach every child the same way. Each…

To understand that not every brain is the same; people aren't 'one size fits all' when it comes to learning, and you can't expect to mould a student to fit your learning expectations. Instead, a tutor needs to be flexible enough to fit the student's needs and goals. A depressed student will need something different from an autistic student, who…

Inside Collingwood ParkTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Summer focused on BODMAS with an emphasis on how brackets change the order of operations, and explored spatial patterns through targeted questions from her maths book.

In Year 8, Emily tackled ratios, rates, gradients and straight lines, including conversions between fractions, decimals and percentages.

Meanwhile, Year 9 student Max worked on applying index laws in algebra as well as finding the highest common factor (HCF) and lowest common multiple (LCM) using real examples.

Recent Challenges

A Year 9 student's tendency to skip double-checking spelling and handwriting in English led to repeated errors, as one tutor noted, "small mistakes around spelling and handwriting kept recurring."

In Year 11 maths, a student hesitated to answer independently, often relying on confirmation rather than trusting their own process.

For a Year 3 reader, frustration arose when unfamiliar words were replaced with similar ones instead of being decoded—writing the word while saying it aloud sometimes helped regain focus.

Meanwhile, a Year 7 student struggled to maintain attention during maths explanations, which meant concepts had to be retaught before any progress was made.

Recent Achievements

A Collingwood Park tutor noticed that one high school student, who previously found poetry analysis daunting, was able to clearly identify which poetic techniques she understood and pinpoint those needing more work—showing real self-awareness that hadn't been there before.

Another secondary student who struggled with applying the Pythagorean theorem managed to complete several related problems independently by the end of the session.

In a younger group, Zebediah used to guess at unfamiliar words but now patiently sounds them out and openly points out which ones he doesn't know, helping direct each lesson's focus.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Redbank Plaza Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Collingwood Park State School.
