In my opinion, I think that it is important to understand every student is different and has their way of learning. It is important for a tutor to identify and tailor a plan for each student so that they are learning efficiently. For example, as I am a visual and auditory learner, I learn most efficiently by watching lectures and videos and less…

Like I said, patience and comfortable environment created between the tutor and the student. Rest all can be taken care of by referring to the respective books and study materials. Interactive studies make students remember and understand topics really well. If a tutor can help the student to enjoy the subjects, then it becomes an activity which…

For me, the most important thing is helping students actually enjoy math and feel comfortable with the process of not knowing right away. A lot of math is about sitting with that discomfort, resisting the urge to panic, and trusting that if you think logically, you’ll find a way through—even if it’s not the “textbook†method. I want…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to open a rapport that makes them feel safe and understood, an environment where they are not afraid to try and even not afraid to fail, in the knowledge that with help and direction they can try again and do better. With the acceptance that 1 style (or even 10 styles!) of teaching…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do is to get a proper understanding of the level of mathematical 'maturity' of a specific student, rather than just assuming a certain background knowledge. Once this is established, it's possible to get the core of what exactly a student is struggling with (usually a particular fundamental concept) and…

In my opinion, being a person that students are comfortable with to reach out for help is one of the most important things. A tutor should be there to assist them, not add stress or pressure to them. I also think it is important for tutors to motivate the students to learn, instead of just giving answers, and in motivating them, tutors should be…

I think a tutor should be able to tell if their student understands something or not, often they don't say it outright and asking them directly might not get them to admit it. So by asking them to solve a question that indirectly uses the concept might help us figure out if they're having trouble or not. Students should also feel comfortable with…

A tutor should create a safe space for a student so that he/she can reach out whenever needed. Through this, a student will feel more comfortable in his/her studies and will acquire more confidence since they will have the opportunity to be more inquisitive. I believe that a tutor should be able to build relationships with a student where the students are provided with an environment where they are heard and observed. Encouraging and patient when explaining concepts to students. Tutors need to provide encouragement as this will build both motivation within the student to do well in a subject, and increase their overall confidence in a difficult topic. I believe setting achievable goals is also an important thing a tutor can do. Patience is also critical, as…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to put in time. They need to act as if it's not just a job which pays. Prepping lessons early, helping with questions outside of tutoring time, marking tests. I believe the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is pose as their mentor than just a teacher. By doing this, a student will feel safe, and empowered; this in turn will make them learn better. Moreover, it is important for a tutor to build their confidence. It is essential to build on the weak areas of a student. Additionally, a…

The most important thing that a tutor can do is to pivot their teaching style in order to suit not only the content but how the student learns. Creating a comfortable learning environment where…

Inside CollinswoodTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Alex focused on division strategies and practiced 8 and 9 times tables during homework sessions, also touching briefly on triangles using visual examples.

For Year 8, Sarah explored the chapter on ratios, working through practical ratio problems and then moved into probability concepts with grid-based questions.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Jason tackled trigonometry—reviewing bearings and angle calculations—and delved into tree diagrams to understand their role in probability problems.

Recent Challenges

In Year 4, a student lost focus during times tables revision—"gets very disinterested with times tables"—making it hard to build fluency beyond the basics.

In Year 8, notes reveal an over-reliance on memory for multiplication rather than setting out workings; as one tutor observed, "relies too heavily on memory at times…instead of being proficient at multiplication."

A Year 10 learner's algebra work showed missing steps and poor page layout, which led to errors being hidden rather than corrected.

Meanwhile, in Year 11 Maths Methods, organization issues meant past problems weren't reviewed before sessions, leaving gaps unaddressed.

Recent Achievements

One Collinswood tutor noticed a Year 9 student who had struggled to connect multiplication and division now starting to explain problems as "groups of" and independently spotting the link between the two operations.

In a senior session, a Year 11 student who was hesitant with surds began expanding brackets on her own after they worked through exercises together, showing more initiative with each step.

Meanwhile, a primary student who usually relied on times tables charts decided to attempt division questions without them and got most answers right, even asking for extra practice when finished.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Walkerville Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Monica's Parish School.
