The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to build their confidence and foster a love for learning. Every child learns at their own pace, and as a tutor, it’s essential to be patient, supportive, and encouraging. The most important thing is for a tutor to understand a student's preferences and what sort of teaching style would suit them. Different people have different learning suitabilities. Thus, a tutor should be able to adapt to suit the student's learning cues. My biggest strengths would be patience, determination, and the willingness to go above and…

What I consider to be the most important things a tutor can do for a student is to build a relationship with them. Listening to a student, assessing what areas they struggle with most, and celebrating the accomplishments they have made in their studies (whether big or small), is key in strengthening the student's trust in the tutor. In turn, this…

I think a good tutor is supposed to firmly believe that every child can achieve success in each subject regardless of any individual difficulties even with special needs. Based on that mindset, a good tutor also need to provide motivation, learning strategies, monitoring and other generic skills such as problem-solving skills and so on to the…

I think one of the most important things a tutor can do is create a comfortable and supportive environment where the student feels confident to ask questions and make mistakes. Learning really happens when students feel safe to try, even if they don’t get it right the first time. A tutor should also explain things in a way that makes sense to…

I think having a positive relationship with the student is really important, in order to ensure there is mutual trust and understanding between student and tutor. The student understands that you want the best for them and in turn will try their best with you. In order to establish this, it is important to understand the pupil's likes, dislikes,…

I think a tutor has to be such kind of person who can unwillingly be able to establish himself/ herself as a role model to follow which will guarantee the success of the the student in the future. I believe the most important things a tutor can do for a student is give the student the support and assistance they need in ways that their classroom teachers cannot. Learn with the student. I am striving to be a better person each day, with it, comes humility. I believe that if you come to the student appearing human and able to make mistakes (as I am not a robot), the student will understand that I am not intimidating nor a machine, but rather human just like they are. Building a strong and humane connection…

Lisa, Coogee

Inside CoogeeTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Robbie focused on multiplying and dividing fractions, then compared different fraction values using visual aids.

In Year 10, Claire worked through compound and simple interest calculations as well as interpreting compounded value tables for financial maths topics.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Alex explored the declining-balance method of depreciation and reducing-balance loans, with practical examples to deepen understanding of financial mathematics concepts.

Recent Challenges

A Year 10 student's test performance revealed persistent timing issues—"still struggling to complete tests in the correct time frame"—with rushed endings leading to unfinished questions in algebra.

For Year 11 Physics, forgotten content after missed sessions resulted in gaps that "couldn't be covered quickly before the test," causing anxiety and confusion.

In Year 6 Maths, unorganized note-taking meant key formulas were missing when revising fractions.

Another senior student hesitated to write working out for worded problems: "He holds back in case he gets an answer wrong," so mistakes remained hidden and feedback couldn't be used effectively.

Recent Achievements

One Coogee tutor recently saw a Year 9 student, previously hesitant to ask for help, now actively seeking clarification whenever confused—a big change from just nodding along in earlier sessions.

A Year 11 student has started fixing mistakes independently after only one correction, where before he would repeat the same error several times.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 learner who used to stumble over times tables is now recalling them more smoothly each week and even completed a new set without prompts during their last session.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Randwick Branch Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Brigid's Catholic Primary School.
