I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to create a comfortable space around them where the student can not only consider their tutor as their guide but also a friend, without any fear of anything. I believe being polite with students, giving them tasks that they can do while having fun at the same time, are some of my…

I think that as a tutor, being able to understand the perspective of the student is crucial in educating them. Tutoring is a student-centred occupation and one should be able to assess students' knowledge in real time in order to develop effective teaching solutions. Another important tutoring technique is to be prepared for sessions. Whether it…

In my opinion, there are at least two things that a tutor can give some help for a student: 1.it is necessary for a tutor to teach students correctly, answer student's questions and response to student's enquires clearly and friendly. 2.It is important for a tutor to help students to figure out what is the most effective way of learning for…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do is to be a role model for students by teaching and encouraging them in all aspects of life. I believe that a good tutor would empower and inspire the students to strive towards their dreams and goals and support them in the process. To teach a topic is to simplify it, make the students imagine and live in the topic by giving them real life examples and case studies. As a tutor I beleive in understanding student's perspective, I try to put myself in their shoes and consider all the possibilities. While preparing a topic I prepare as if the students know everything (which helps…

As far as my understanding, as a tutor, he/she always needs to motivate their students to think more widely and creatively. It is true, initially, they will fail several times. Allowing them to do it, will build their confidence for their future, which will be eventually worth it for their life. As a tutor, I am always friendly, patiently try to…

I believe the most important thing as a tutor is to be positive and encourage students at all times. When I received tutoring in high school the most effective way in which I learnt was to be encouraged to try the question even if I had no idea how to do it. It is always for me to put their thoughts first and give them the importance. It is simply how a student learn and grow. A little bit of channeling of concepts, guidance and being there as a support is what makes it work. It is all about concepts how well you know them and how easy you can make them for students to understand. I always try to…

Aside from the obvious answer of improving a students mathematical ability, I think the most important thing that a tutor can do is inspire a love for the subject and the confidence not to be intimidated when encountering a new, difficult problem for the first time. Tutors are there to motivate a student to achieve greater outcomes in life, principally in the area of academic study. Whether this is confidence, the knowledge that someone believes in them, strategies for studying and/or comprehension, through to developing initiative, self correction skills and the ability to constantly improve, tutoring is a…

From my point of view, inspiring student motivation for learning and helping the student become an independent learner are the most important things a tutor can do for a student. Approach tutoring with an open mind. Some students can easily grasp the concepts while the others it may take time or a special approach for them to understand.Making the student feel comfortable is very important to allow them to express themselves and feel free to ask if they don't understand. Inside CoorparooTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student George focused on mastering long division using hands-on materials like wooden sticks, along with practicing timetables up to 12 and exploring simple area calculations for rectangles.

Year 9 student Helena worked through simplifying algebraic expressions and factorising, then moved on to expanding expressions as part of her homework.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Ethan revised differentiation techniques including anti-differentiation, tackled calculus questions involving logarithmic functions, and reviewed absolute and relative maxima/minima in preparation for upcoming exams.

Recent Challenges

In Year 8 mathematics, one student repeatedly avoided recording numbers carefully during long division and subtraction, leading to "random" errors that couldn't be traced back easily. As noted: "he copied a 3 instead of a 7," showing how distraction mid-task can disrupt the whole process.

In Year 11 Specialist Maths, incomplete homework was an issue; another student skipped revision on exam-type questions and forgot key formulas when tackling past papers.

Over-reliance on calculators for basic arithmetic in Year 9 meant essential number skills weren't being consolidated.

Missed or unfinished assignments in both Science (Year 10) and English (Year 12) delayed feedback and left important gaps heading into assessment deadlines.

Recent Achievements

One Coorparoo tutor noticed a Year 10 student who previously hesitated to seek help now openly asks both the tutor and their teacher when stuck—something they'd never done last term.

In a recent high school maths session, another student who struggled with neat working in long division has begun using "lanes" for numbers, resulting in far tidier solutions and fewer errors.

Meanwhile, a Year 12 student tackling calculus was able to correctly answer all differentiation questions on her own after consistently back-checking her work—a big change from needing step-by-step guidance just weeks ago.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Stones Corner Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Queensland Pathways State College - Inner City Campus.
