The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is making his/her learning journey easier and fun. Not to forget, as a tutor, making sure my students have understood concepts and are able to tackle problems/questions. I believe in the idea of practical learning, i.e., linking concepts to real life events as much as possible. Alongside…

The most important quality that a tutor needs is patience. It is crucial that a tutor takes their time to work out what their student's strengths and weaknesses are, so they can help the student improve. Then, they need to be ready to answer the students' questions as many times as they need to. They also need to articulate their knowledge in a…

I strongly believe that the role of a tutor, more than anything else, is to inspire a student to believe that they are capable of achieving whatever they put their mind to. Being patient while they're learning is vital in ensuring that they remain patient with themselves especially through times they are struggling with understanding something.…

Be patient. Tutors cannot expect students to understand or get the question right the first time. It is important for tutors to understand where the student went wrong and to slowly and easily correct them by following the question. Once they grasped an understanding, tutors should give the student similar questions to practice so they are…

I feel a good tutor would be there for the student at all times whether its regarding the subject or any other hardships they may be facing as a student. I wish to provide all my support for the growth of the student. Moreover, we as tutors should help the students gain more knowledge about the subject in a way they learn to love the subject as…

To bring out the best in students would be the most important thing as a tutor. The strengths of students differ individually, hence, they will perform differently. I think in Asia, people only care about performance. Still, as a 'victim' from this educational background, I would take it seriously and care about confidence building simultaneously. When I grew up, I discovered math is not only about finding the answer but about risk-taking, and when you face a new circumstance, you can find the answer calmly.…

There are two most important things that students can do for a student. One is to know how to apply suitable methods to answer students' confusion and guide students in the right direction. Roanne has been tutoring my daughter in Yr 11 maths for a few months now and we couldn't be happier. She finds Roanne very easy to communicate with and says she explains difficult concepts in a very easy to understand way. We're very happy our daughter has Roanne to support her through HSC maths next year!

Inside CorrimalTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Remi focused on multiplication and division through homework review, rapid-fire arithmetic practice, and calendar/time questions.

Year 7 student worked on fractions and geometry, including Greek mythology context for their English assessment, using a one-pager format to connect ideas.

Another Year 8 student tackled Pythagoras' theorem alongside percentages and algebra problems, reinforcing each skill with targeted maths exercises.

Recent Challenges

In Year 8 English, one student avoided reading assigned texts in favour of familiar manga and hesitated to expand his reading "palette"—a concern as set novels become central for essays.

During a History assessment, he needed extensive prompting to formulate responses: "I had to 'hold' Max's hand through the research and writing portion," noted the tutor, highlighting reluctance to work independently.

In high school maths (Years 7–8), another student was unwilling to show working out, preferring just answers; this made it harder to identify mistakes during revision.

After setbacks or difficult days, motivation sometimes dropped sharply, slowing progress mid-task.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Corrimal noticed a big shift with Max, a high school student who used to brush off challenging English tasks but now actively works through drafts and asks for help when stuck—he recently finished revising his assignment on Otzi without giving up.

Another high schooler, Arvon, has become much more independent with double-digit multiplication: he now uses the 2x2 grid method confidently and even corrected the tutor's mistake during a recent session.

Meanwhile, Remi in primary school moved from struggling to add small numbers to flying through larger sums using finger counting, needing barely any guidance by lesson's end.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Corrimal District Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Columbkille's Catholic Primary School.
