I believe the most important things a tutor can do for a student are to create a supportive and encouraging learning environment, build their confidence, and help them truly understand concepts rather than just memorise them. A good tutor should be patient, adaptable, and attentive to a students individual needs, while also motivating them to stay…

One of the most important things a tutor can do is just be patient with them. As students are brought up in a competitive environment in school, most times they feel inferior to their peers as not everyone learns at the same pace. Some learn faster and some learn slower and most often students feel lost and pressured. As a tutor, being there for…

Building the student's confidence and knowledge are the two key aspects of being a tutor that I have found during my experience. Nothing is more important than a student feeling they can combat the work which is put in front of them. I can be flexible and work with the strengths and weaknesses of my students. I am extremely organised which allows…

I feel the problem with most tutors is they know their content but that they don't know how the other child would grasp it as in my experience each child is different and as tutors we must understand their way of understanding and try explaining in a way that it is easy for them to understand. So this is one of the most important things a tutor…

The most important thing that a tutor can present is the additional support and knowledge beyond what students learn in school. The tutor's presence serves to be a reference point for the students and their goal is to nurture and nourish the student academically. Students should be able to clear any confusions and express their queries without…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student it be approachable. If the student feels comfortable asking questions and being honest about what they don't understand, it makes teaching them much easier. That's why, as a tutor, I would do my very best to be friendly and comfortable with the student, and make sure they can enjoy learning…

Listen and understand, as well as not rushing them but still applying pressure to their studies, most students lack confidence within themselves, so inspiring confidence within a student is a huge base step to learning. Engaging, listening, understanding as well as being able to problem solve and find unique ways to explain content in order for…

Be supportive of their difficulties, mistakes and challenges. Everyone deserves the chance to learn and part of learning is making mistakes. If mistakes are always treated as awful, they still won't stop. However, the student will feel terrible every time they make one and will either push themselves too far, or lose motivation to learn. I'm…

I consider one of the most important things a tutor can do for a student is build their confidence. Once this is established and the student has faith in their own abilities, the tutor is able to guide and facilitate their learning as a pose to simply instruct. The role of the tutor is to recognise what the student is capable of doing on their own…

I believe one of the most important things a tutor can do for a student is to use personalised strategies that suit the student's learning style so that they can benefit from their one-on-one lessons in a way that they don't have the opportunity to in the classroom. What I consider to be the most important things a tutor can do for a student is understanding the pace the student requires and not focusing on how much a student can complete in a set time. A tutor needs to be able to successfully teach the student the material but also needs to provide the motivation and confidence a student needs to study and conquer any tests/exams. Students study around the clock, thus a tutor needs to be available when assistance is most required to provide the necessary support. Also recognise that many things…

My thesis paper was about how positive reinforcement positively affects the students academics and based on the results the most important thing a teacher can do for a student is to appreciate them and the effort that they put in their work. Giving encouragement to a student will mean so much to them and that can motivate them to do better in…

It is highly important to provide the student with a support network in which the student feels confident to ask any questions and feels comfortable. Inside DallasTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 10 student Wellson revised solving simultaneous equations using matrices in maths, and also practiced analytical writing techniques for English assignments.

In Year 11, Abby focused on preparing notes and drafting essays comparing *The Dressmaker* and *The Crucible* for her upcoming English exam, as well as researching career paths and university options.

Meanwhile, Year 12 student Wellson worked through advanced maths topics such as transition matrices and steady state matrices while also reviewing feedback from previous English SACs to strengthen his essay structure and exam readiness.

Recent Challenges

In Year 8 Maths, "frequently forgetting to write down all working out" meant a student lost track of steps when solving algebra problems, making it hard to spot where things went wrong.

For a Year 11 student, missing or inconsistent use of the graphics calculator—after it was stolen— made tackling maths exercises much slower and more frustrating.

In senior English, one student struggled with planning essays and didn't consistently apply teacher feedback, leading to weaker arguments under exam conditions.

As a tutor noted: "Formatting of solutions is less organised than it should be, which makes it harder to follow for future reference."

Recent Achievements

A Dallas tutor recently noticed Oscar, a high school student, now talks through his problem-solving steps aloud and needs far less reassurance than before—he's started using the backchecking method independently instead of asking for constant confirmation.

Abby, also in high school, used to get overwhelmed by essay planning but has begun creating cohesive revision schedules and compiling her own notes for upcoming exams without prompting.

Meanwhile, in a Year 6 session, one student who previously froze on tricky maths questions began writing out all available information first and tried different approaches until finding a solution.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Hume Libraries—or at your child's school (with permission), like Ilim College - Kiewa Campus.
