As a biology tutor's job is to be supplementary to a students learning, the most vital role a tutor can fulfill is to be sympathetic and understanding to a student's situation, and to be adaptive in the way they assist the student in order to maximise their potential. My communication skills allow me to help students understand complex topics and…

Personally, a biology tutor is someone outside of school who the student can rely on for their studies. Students show their vulnerability here so that tutor can build them to be strong at school. So a tutor can help the student be strong on their subjects and understand the subject with life. Understanding the student on what they need first and…

Being available for your students is the most significant thing any tutor can do. Just being available alone is not the thing, you must also be able to communicate with them in order to understand where they are facing difficulties while learning. Understand their problems and provide the best solution for them to catch things better. A single…

I believe the most important thing a biology tutor can do is tailor their approach to each student’s unique needs, fostering the development of critical thinking and problem-solving skills. This not only helps students gain confidence but also equips them with the tools to tackle educational challenges and take ownership of their learning. My…

Be considerate, patient, understanding, and non-judgemental. It can be very hard to accept help in the first place, and being made to feel like you're failing or a burden is only going to make that harder. I work to understand how their mind works so I can explain in a way they will best understand. I am also very patient, particularly with those…

1. Remaining patient with the student no matter what so as to encourage them to keep working on a problem rather than feel discouraged by a minor setback. This should be achieved by positive talk and reinforcing the importance of clarifying concepts to the student. 2. Praising new achievements of the student to ensure that they feel encouraged to…

I think one of the most important things a biology tutor can do is build a student’s confidence. It’s not just about helping them get the right answer, but helping them believe they’re capable of getting there on their own. A tutor should also create a supportive environment where the student feels safe to ask questions, make mistakes, and…

A tutor should be fair and promote independent thinking rather than just giving answers. Encouraging students to analyze problems, develop strategies, and build logical reasoning skills is essential. Another key role is boosting confidence—many students struggle not due to a lack of ability, but self-doubt. By providing structured learning,…

Inside DaptoTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 8 student Cailyn worked on simplifying algebraic expressions with positive indices and practiced two-step equations, focusing on changing the subject of a formula.

Year 10 student Daniel reviewed financial mathematics concepts like simple interest and tax brackets, then applied trigonometry using SOHCAHTOA to solve right-angled triangle problems.

Meanwhile, Year 12 student Nicholas focused on network concepts such as critical paths and also revised non-right angled trigonometry, using past HSC questions for practice.

Recent Challenges

Across Years 7–12, process challenges are often linked to written working and recall.

For example, in Year 10 algebra, a student "skipped showing steps in equations," making it harder to spot sign errors—this meant time was lost correcting avoidable mistakes instead of learning new methods.

In Year 11 trigonometry, one student struggled with recalling which function (sin/cos/tan) to use and hesitated to label triangle sides on paper, as noted: "She faces difficulty identifying which sides of a right angle triangle are given."

Meanwhile, several students in upper primary repeatedly avoided writing out timestables or formulas, leading to slower problem-solving during tests.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Dapto noticed one high school student who, after previously doubting her algebra skills whenever letters appeared, now confidently expands terms and works through equations independently.

Another older student, who once hesitated to tackle HSC-level network concepts, recently worked hard on practice questions and now chooses more challenging problems without prompting.

In a primary session, Ariana started using new multiplication tricks she'd struggled with before; she now remembers them during timed activities and asks for extra flashcards to keep practising.

Last week, Joel completed his statistics homework using the elimination method with almost no help.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Dapto District Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St John's Catholic Primary School.
