The most important thing a tutor can do for their student is to show them that they have great potential, as well as leave them with invaluable lessons that they will call upon throughout the rest of their education journey. - I am young and I am a very social person, which means that building a rapport with young students comes very…

Making sure they completely understand what you are teaching them and not just agreeing with what you are saying. Going through examples and getting them to explain stuff back, etc. I believe that my strengths as a tutor is that I am good at Maths, good with people, good memory, and hard working to make sure the person I am helping gets the best…

I believe the most important things a tutor can do are build confidence and provide a personalised approach. A tutors job is to create a safe space where a student feels comfortable making mistakes, as that's often where the best learning happens. By being patient and adaptable, a tutor can identify a student's strengths and teach them the…

I consider effective communication to be very important between the tutor and the student as it is essential for the proper understanding of what the tutor is teaching. Feedback for the student is also very important because it allows the student to work on their weaknesses and improve. I think I can offer multiple ways to explain a topic. This…

First of all, empathy so student never feels uncomfortable about not knowing a topic. Secondly, the ability to listen is as important as explaining things, so I'll be able to understand their point of view on a specific problem/subject. And, of course, the knowledge the tutor provides will be a main achievement and a perfect indicator of progress.…

Gain confidence, I feel students are confused and not able to express their confusion. Take an approach where a tutor can balance the academic needs which are immediate but also develop critical thinking skills in the student which are long term benefits. Help the student completely understand the concepts at hand. I personally don't believe anyone can inherently be "bad at math". If anything, they just take longer to understand than others. As long as they possess enough willpower to do so, anything is possible. Another thing is that a student must leave the session learning something new. I am…

The most important thing a student can do is not the content they teach but the transferable skills and fundamental knowledge a student requires to succeed on their own. I believe that a significant portion of students do not do well because they lack the fundamentals or do not have the right study techniques to learn at their best. As a tutor, it…

The most important things that a tutor can do for a student is teach the student what they want to learn in a way that they understand, since everyone learns differently and at a different rate. Inside DarchTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 3 student Ethan worked through revision on numbers and measurements, using hands-on examples to solidify concepts.

For Year 8, Priya focused on ratios and their practical applications, then explored strategies for effective note-taking.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Sam tackled linear relationships by interpreting graphs and practiced expanding and factorising algebraic expressions to build confidence with more complex equations.

Recent Challenges

In Year 7 algebra, one student shut down a little and started getting questions she was getting right wrong when asked to rearrange equations, especially if she had to combine steps or recall multiple methods.

A Year 9 student often struggled with worded problems—she could solve equations but hesitated when formulas needed applying in unfamiliar contexts ("struggled to apply the formulas to questions").

In senior years, another learner needed prompts for the first steps of polynomial questions; without these, progress stalled.

The confusion in interpreting question wording left students uncertain about which strategies or rules fit, sometimes erasing earlier gains in confidence.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Darch noticed a Year 11 student who used to freeze after mistakes now keeps working through questions, even when she gets stuck, and asks for specific explanations instead of giving up.

In a recent session with a Year 9 student, the tutor saw her apply algebra skills independently—she expanded brackets and solved for x on her own after struggling to connect the steps before.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 student who previously mixed up fractions can now represent mixed numbers visually and explain how division relates to fractions without prompting from the tutor.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Girrawheen Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Ashdale Secondary College.
