The most important thing a chemistry tutor can do for a student is to help them figure out how to learn in many different ways, thus setting them up for a lifetime of learning. It is also important for a tutor to encourage their student to improve and to celebrate these improvements. My main strength as a tutor is patience with struggling or…

The most important thing a chemistry tutor can do for a student is giving them confidence that they can learn. This will give them confidence to try and be creative in finding ways to understand any complex topic they need to know. One of my strengths as a tutor is that I am creative in discussing complex topics. I can discuss the same topic in…

It's not just about helping them understand the content. It’s about helping them believe they can understand it. A good tutor should be patient, encouraging,…

Chemistry Tutor Booker Bay, NSW
I believe a truly effective tutor can accurately pinpoint the source of a student's struggle with a particular topic, and propose the correct solution. For example, trouble with foundational concepts often stems from a fundamental misunderstanding of the basics, therefore it is important to readdress the theory portion of the topic and provide…

While it is important that students are achieving the marks they want, this is only half of the game. As a chemistry tutor, I want to be able to maximise their performance but also teach them the fundamental skills that come along with achieving success. Things like consistency, discipline and a growth mindset aren’t part of any NSW syllabus,…

Inside DavistownTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Jack practised basic division and addition with carrying up to three digits, along with quick recall of multiplication tables up to 6.

For Year 8, Sarah worked through rearranging formulae to change the subject and substituting values into equations, applying these skills to her homework questions.

Meanwhile, Year 9 student Ben focused on solving worded percentage problems in financial maths, including calculating commissions and profit using real-life examples.

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 student entered a lesson without essential notes or their workbook, which meant he didn't have any guidelines for revision and struggled to focus—this led to an improvised session and missed exam preparation.

In Year 11, another student repeatedly relied on a calculator being available, and when it wasn't, progress slowed as the tutor had to calculate several questions for him.

For a Year 10 trigonometry topic, skipped working was observed: "she needs to make sure she writes all her working out," since not recording steps made error-checking difficult mid-session. The consequence? Time lost clarifying avoidable mistakes rather than learning new material.

Recent Achievements

One Davistown tutoring session saw a Year 9 student move from confusion to real understanding with Pythagoras' Theorem—after struggling at first, he walked away confidently explaining the foundational steps.

In Year 11, a tutor noticed a big shift: where this student used to hesitate, she now asks for extra homework and seeks help without prompting, showing genuine initiative.

Meanwhile, in Year 4 maths, a quieter student began volunteering answers before questions were even fully explained—a big change from her earlier reluctance to speak up. Last week, she completed an entire worksheet unassisted and checked her own work for errors.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Kincumber Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Brisbania Public School.
