To me, the most essential role a tutor can fulfill is that of an enabler and empowerer. I believe a tutor's primary goal should be to provide students with a strong foundation of knowledge and a resilient problem-solving framework, not only to tackle academic challenges but also to navigate any obstacle life may present. An empowering tutor equips…

To create a supportive, encouraging environment where they feel safe to make mistakes and grow. Human connection is the foundation of effective learning. In a world flooded with online resources and AI-driven tools, what students often lack isn't access to information, but meaningful guidance. Tutors bring the human element back into learning by…

As a tutor's job is to be supplementary to a students learning, the most vital role a tutor can fulfill is to be sympathetic and understanding to a student's situation, and to be adaptive in the way they assist the student in order to maximise their potential. The most important things a tutor can do for a student, in my opinion, are not only concrete plans and a sufficient level of knowledge, but also empathy to understand what the student needs and their natural ability. I believe the best thing a tutor can do is to inspire confidence and a deep appreciation for lifelong learning in the student. While many students will not utilise the specific knowledge they learnt within a certain HSC subject later on, the ability to know how to learn; how to structure a study timetable, how to find a work-life balance, are all…

1. Students who believe they "are just bad at math" will block themselves from learning. It's important to rebuild that self-belief by pacing lessons to guarantee early, small wins that stack into genuine confidence. 2. Don't just hand over answers or act as a human calculator. The goal is to teach independent problem-solving strategies and…

I think it is important for the tutor to influence the student to be more enthusiastic towards his studies. It is easier to learn stuff with focus and the right attitude. The tutor has to try and make sessions interesting. Also, at the end of the day, the student must not be dependent on the tutor. As a tutor, you know you have succeeded when once…

Show the student how to learn something. If a tutor can explain another way of looking at problems so that the student understands how to approach them, its the most useful thing for them. The most important thing a tutor can do for the student is make him/her feel like he/she could ask any question there is. That's what makes the individual, one-on-one contact valuable in my opinion. Creating a setting where the student feels comfortable enough to do that is the most important thing. The student should feel like I'm there to help…

Inside Double BayTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Eva focused on finding the area of triangles and converting tricky fractions to decimals, using worked examples for clarity.

In Year 7, Emmanuel tackled review questions on expressions, equations, and inequalities while also refining his problem-solving approach as misconceptions arose.

Meanwhile, Year 3 student Isaac practiced multiplication with emphasis on the 2 and 3 times tables and spent time reading analogue clocks to reinforce understanding of time.

Recent Challenges

A Year 11 Chemistry student hesitated with back titration and struggled to express key ideas clearly—"she was unable to phrase this concept succinctly and with clarity," noted her tutor. This meant exam responses were incomplete or vague, affecting marks.

Meanwhile, a Year 9 student's test performance suffered from weak time management; she often left questions unfinished.

In Year 4, over-reliance on counting boards slowed basic addition and subtraction, making it hard to move beyond simple sums without aids.

For a Year 8 student, skipping steps when rearranging equations led to confusion in algebra tasks and lost working marks.

Recent Achievements

One Double Bay tutor recently noticed a Year 11 student who had previously struggled with pH calculations manage to work through multi-step problems independently after some targeted practice, even explaining the difference between strong and weak polyprotic acids.

In Year 8 chemistry, another student who was hesitant with solubility rules last week was able to solve multi-part questions on her own after extra explanation.

Meanwhile, a younger student in Year 3 has started checking her addition answers by counting in fives—a big shift from past weeks when she wouldn't suggest ways to self-check at all.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Double Bay Central Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Double Bay Public School.
