One of the most important things a tutor can do for a student is to be a reliable source of guidance and support. Consistency helps build trust, and when students know they can depend on their tutor, they feel more confident in their learning journey. A great tutor also adapts to the student’s needs, making lessons engaging and effective. Beyond…

Having a growth mindset as a tutor in combination with the 7 C's are the most important qualities for a tutor. The 7 C's are: control (coming prepared for the lesson and having a plan), clarity (providing straightforward explanations and finding ways to clarify confusing concepts), conversation (engage and interact with students), care (wanting…

Be very accessible - the student should feel comfortable in asking the tutor questions. Communication - the tutor should be able to explain and teach each student according to their level of learning. Knowledge - the tutor must have the required knowledge and resources that the student requires. My strength would be my ability to adjust and…

I believe that a good tutor should have credentials, good grades, of course, a Master's degree, and experience in the field. But I do not feel that this is enough. ability to make a strong communication and convey the idea are other factors of successful tutor. My major strength is my experience. I think the most important things a tutor can do for a student is provide them the information which is accurate, and present it in a manner that they will love learning and explore their abilities. A teacher plays a role of a mentor or professional parent in student's life and can shape their career by providing valuable information in…

I can easily tell if a student really understands a concept properly. If a student doesn't, then I know there's need to correct that by providing them with fundamental…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is being patient. Every student is unique and has his/her specific needs in terms of how to deliver a specific content. Patience is the most important thing that is needed, in my opinion, in order to clearly understand a particular student's needs and to craft a lecture that is successfully…

The most important things a tutor can do is to bring the best out of a student. Aside from assisting the problems students might have in schools, it is equally important for a tutor to act as a role model through showing great examples. On top of that, a tutor should also be empathetic in order to know the student's strengths and weaknesses so…

I think the most important thing a tutor can offer to a younger student is their experience, similar to that of a mentor. Beyond course content, tutors can draw from their study, career and life experiences to help the student navigate their path. I consider patience to be the most important virtue in a tutor, setting small checkpoints between certain topics is a good strategy. A tutor should always pause and ask if the student has any questions or doubts about the concept. A tutor should make the student feel comfortable around them and they should not hesitate to ask any questions - no…

The hardest hump for a student to get over is laying the foundations and complete understanding of the basics to propel from. Being friendly and adapting their teaching speed to the pace of the student. not having one universal teaching style, but altering it is how you keep the student interested and make it easier for them to grasp the concept. For example, using sports examples to explain a physics concept to a high school athlete will keep them engaged longer and add…

Be an attentive listener then explain the concept in the way your student will best understand it. Patience, most tutors give up after their students don't follow along with…

A tutor can make a student love the subject he/she hates. The most important thing for a tutor is to understand the student, his/her interests, aptitude, and what he/she is inclined towards. If you have a basic idea of the student mindset you can develop techniques to make them understand the subject in a way they don't find it hard. Gamification…

Inside Double BayTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Eva focused on finding the area of triangles and converting tricky fractions to decimals, using worked examples for clarity.

In Year 7, Emmanuel tackled review questions on expressions, equations, and inequalities while also refining his problem-solving approach as misconceptions arose.

Meanwhile, Year 3 student Isaac practiced multiplication with emphasis on the 2 and 3 times tables and spent time reading analogue clocks to reinforce understanding of time.

Recent Challenges

A Year 11 Chemistry student hesitated with back titration and struggled to express key ideas clearly—"she was unable to phrase this concept succinctly and with clarity," noted her tutor. This meant exam responses were incomplete or vague, affecting marks.

Meanwhile, a Year 9 student's test performance suffered from weak time management; she often left questions unfinished.

In Year 4, over-reliance on counting boards slowed basic addition and subtraction, making it hard to move beyond simple sums without aids.

For a Year 8 student, skipping steps when rearranging equations led to confusion in algebra tasks and lost working marks.

Recent Achievements

One Double Bay tutor recently noticed a Year 11 student who had previously struggled with pH calculations manage to work through multi-step problems independently after some targeted practice, even explaining the difference between strong and weak polyprotic acids.

In Year 8 chemistry, another student who was hesitant with solubility rules last week was able to solve multi-part questions on her own after extra explanation.

Meanwhile, a younger student in Year 3 has started checking her addition answers by counting in fives—a big shift from past weeks when she wouldn't suggest ways to self-check at all.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Double Bay Central Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Double Bay Public School.
