The most important thing a math tutor can do for a student is help them build confidence. From my experience, most students understand math but are afraid of it. Being scared of math makes it more likely for students to make mistakes. My HSC maths teacher used to say that to be able to understand mathematics, one must understand the basics of it…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do is to truly understand the student and make them feel supported and comfortable. It's crucial to identify where the student is struggling and where they need support, as well as recognizing their potential. Tailoring the teaching approach to suit the individual needs of each student is key, as I…

I think the most important things a tutor can do are to create a supportive environment, encourage curiosity, and build the student’s confidence in their own abilities. A tutor should not just provide answers, but also guide the student in developing problem-solving skills and independent thinking, so they can succeed beyond the tutoring…

Empathy is key. If a tutor can show how learning certain topics can help a student in the future, it keeps the student's interest held in the subject for longer. What really helps is to periodically give some positive feedback to the student about their progress - how he or she has improved in the past 3 months, or month, for example. Because of…

The most important thing to me is creating the networks for students to think for and teach themselves whenever our time is up. It's the classic saying, "give a man a fish he'll eat for a day, teach a man to fish and he'll eat for his whole life". A tutor should, like any good teacher, provide the student with the tools to critically evaluate…

I believe the most important things a tutor can do for a student is to listen to them because the student is the one who knows what they're struggling with and they are the ones who are going to tell me what they need to learn. Furthermore, I think it is important to teach students how to learn and study so that they can keep learning and working…

I believe the most important things a tutor can do are build trust, encourage genuine confidence, and teach students how to learn independently. It's not just about helping them get through one subject or assignment, it's about giving them the skills and self-belief they can carry with them into everything else they do. I think my main strengths…

There a number of things that I think tutor can do for a student. 1. I believe that the tutor should answer almost any question the student has. 2. A tutor should support the development of the student, but in the same way do so without making the student over-reliant on the tutor. In this way, the student will be able to maintain their success throughout their whole academic career. They should be patient and willing to explain things from different perspectives, especially if it seems the…

I believe the most important things a tutor can do for a student are to build their confidence and foster independent thinking. There is a quote by William Butler Yeats that captures the essence of what I believe is crucial for a tutor: "Education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire." This means that a tutor's role is not just to transfer information to the student, but to spark their curiosity and interest in learning. Therefore, the most important…

Encourage them to pursue their dreams. Teach them to be lifelong learners. I believe you have completely understood the concept when you can simplify it entirely. So, the student should totally grasp the concepts at hand. A tutor can help the student realize their passions, and help them achieve it. Making the students interested in the subject by…

Personally, being adaptable and flexible in your teaching is the most important thing a tutor can do for any student. As individuals, we all learn at a different pace through a variety of mediums. The most important things for a tutor is to be a source of support that they can reach out to, not only in the specific subject that they're tutoring, but also studying and school life in general. I think it is important to be patient with your students. Some students are slower to learn than others, and others learn things in different ways compared to the rest. If you have the patience to teach them all properly, then it really shows on their performance. I believe that one of my strength is that I take pride in teaching my students. If…

Local Reviews

I needed a sensitive, switched on tutor that would enthuse & engage my 9 yr old who was extremely resistant to the process. Liaising with ezymaths was easy & smooth. The tutor recommended has been wonderful. In a short period of just a few months, my daughter's proficiency as well as confidence has grown significantly & this is substantiated by her school teacher as well. I would recommend this service definitely.

Inside Dover HeightsTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Olivia focused on addition and subtraction of large numbers as well as introductory statistics questions, using Mathletics practice to build confidence.

For Year 10, Lukas worked through a range of simultaneous equations and also practiced finding the equation of a line from parallel and perpendicular lines to prepare for upcoming assessments.

In Year 11, Alex reviewed fractional indices and binomial products, then tackled exponential equations and rationalising derivatives with support from targeted worksheets and textbook problems.

Recent Challenges

In Year 11, one student repeatedly arrived unprepared, forgetting past papers and missing key revision materials; as noted, "he did not bring the past papers that I had previously given him." This disrupted lesson flow and meant less time was spent on practice with True Bearings or Financial Math.

Meanwhile, a Year 7 student often lost focus during multiplication drills and grew frustrated when unsure of next steps—leaving gaps in basic numeracy that lingered into later sessions.

In primary years, one child hesitated to tackle challenging questions out of low confidence, which led to avoiding essential practice with time-based problems.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Dover Heights noticed a big shift with Oliver (Year 11), who started identifying his own weak spots in algebra and, after some targeted practice, was able to complete previously challenging questions independently.

In Year 9, Taiaroa showed new persistence: though he struggled at first with fractions and percentages, by the end of the session he could convert between decimals and fractions without prompting.

Meanwhile, Ruby (Year 4) moved past her earlier hesitation with number patterns—she now recognises them confidently and remembered most of her timetables during their latest session.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Double Bay Central Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Kesser Torah College.
