It is essential for a tutour to try and ensure that they empower their student, by instilling confidence in them regarding their own ability. Also, a tutour must ensure that they are dealing with a student's queries with patience and dedication. As a tutour, I believe I am great at establishing a bond with my student, which is a really important…

I think the most important thing as a tutor you need to be honest, be flexible, be patient, be a good listener, teach the student how to learn. I believe tutors fill a different role than teachers and parents, and that puts them in a unique position to support students. Personal relationships are foundational to student success -- the more…

The most important things a tutor can do for a student involve making the student understand the concepts at a deep level, rather than tutoring them solely for the purpose of achieving higher grades. I believe a good tutor should remove the fear of a subject, if any, from a student's mind and encourage them to learn in more detail, while providing…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is being prepared. I have had 1-1 Spanish tutoring in the past, and every week my tutor would arrive prepared with documents and interactive lessons, which were fundamental in enriching my learning of the subject and making the sessions more enjoyable. The most important thing about tutoring is to ensure the students learn strategies to learn new mathematical concepts, so they can succeed on their own. This is because if a tutor were to consistenly helep a student by giving answers, the tutor is not going to accompany the students into their exams, and so the students may feel lost without the…

To listen to the students' needs. Once you understand someone's problem, working with them to fix it is a lot easier, and this applies to education as well. 1. Give the motivation and belief of actually having the potential to grow and improve. 2. Actually explain the theory to an in-depth level to solve similar problems with different twists. 3. Wendy, Earlwood

Inside EarlwoodTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 8 student Alex worked through quadratic expressions, focusing on factorising both monic and non-monic equations using the PSF method, and practiced solving quadratics by completing the square and applying the quadratic formula.

For Year 7, Aimee concentrated on converting between decimals and percentages as well as reviewing mean, mode, median, and range in data sets, rounding off with division practice.

Meanwhile, Year 5 student Cooper tackled converting mixed fractions to improper fractions (and vice versa), along with simplifying fractions using guided examples from class resources.

Recent Challenges

In Year 9 algebra, he skipped showing steps in equations, which hid sign errors, making it difficult to trace where calculations went wrong.

For a Year 7 assignment, forgetting the assignment sheet for geography led to confusion about requirements and incomplete planning.

A senior student working on compound interest relied heavily on calculator use without manual checking, missing conceptual understanding.

In primary-level word problems, a tendency to avoid writing full explanations meant answers lacked clarity—especially when units were omitted.

After setbacks with tricky fraction tasks in Year 6 maths, confidence dropped and revision was avoided for harder questions, slowing improvement.

Recent Achievements

One Earlwood tutor noticed a real shift in a Year 9 student's approach to surds: while she was hesitant to attempt questions independently at first, by the end of the session she worked through all the problems on her own and even explained her reasoning out loud.

Another high school student, previously slow with percentage change calculations, now solves them much faster and connects ideas from previous weeks without prompting.

Meanwhile, a Year 5 learner who used to read quietly and wait for correction now reads research material aloud during sessions, double-checks his work independently, and found key information himself for an assignment.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Earlwood Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Primary School.
