A great tutor doesn’t just provide answers—they guide students toward discovering solutions themselves, helping them become more resilient and self-sufficient learners. Encouragement,…

To empathetically understand the level of students and the hurdles they may be facing to grasp a concept, while also keeping in focus the background of students. Besides focusing on making them understand the concepts and applications, I teach in a way that the students become confident, independent and problem solvers themselves. I provide a safe…

Something I believe is important is fostering a passion within the student for the subject, being the reason why someone starts to like something, become passionate, and work hard from their heart rather than from external sources. I would love to help students find genuine interest in Maths and Chemistry as much as I did. I try experimenting with…

The most important thing is to be a tutor if she can develop these abilities in his student. 1. why they are studying a particular subject? 2. How they can understand the laws of nature by doing science. 3. How they can develop the ability to ask questions? 4. How they can find the right answers to their questions. 5. Science is not a burden…

The most important things a tutor can do for a student is to lay a right foundation for the student to learn. Teaching them not to memorise formulae but to actually understand the theory behind the formula as higher levels of maths rely on prior knowledge that needs to be firmly understood. My strengths lie within my experience and personality. I…

One of the most important things a tutor can do for a student is to help them develop their critical thinking skills. This enables them to solve problems independently when they encounter unfamiliar problems. In addition, building confidence and enthusiasm in a student is another important responsibility of a tutor. There are few important things a tutor can do their students: -Transfer their extensive knowledge onto their students so they can solve their academic problems. - Be patient and calm, even if they have to repeat something 100 times, they have to make sure that the student is clear about the problem. -Build relationships so that student…

I find it important for tutors to be able to make a student comfortable to ask them questions and to give wrong answers. The most important way we learn is through seeing our failures and determining what we can do better the next time. Without being able to acknowledge their own mistakes and see how they can do better, students will not be able…

The most important thing a tutor can do is make the student passionate about their subject. If the student isn't motivated to learn, no amount of lecturing or assignments will help them. There are so many small things about each subject that are super interesting to learn about, but without the right tutor some students miss out. As a young tutor…

Help them achieve their goals. It isn't about getting the highest marks, it's about improving and feeling good about going into tests and exams and feeling confident you know the material. I believe a tutor can uplift the confidence of a student by encouraging him/her every step of the way which will benefit the students in their future. Wendy, Earlwood

Inside EarlwoodTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 8 student Alex worked through quadratic expressions, focusing on factorising both monic and non-monic equations using the PSF method, and practiced solving quadratics by completing the square and applying the quadratic formula.

For Year 7, Aimee concentrated on converting between decimals and percentages as well as reviewing mean, mode, median, and range in data sets, rounding off with division practice.

Meanwhile, Year 5 student Cooper tackled converting mixed fractions to improper fractions (and vice versa), along with simplifying fractions using guided examples from class resources.

Recent Challenges

In Year 9 algebra, he skipped showing steps in equations, which hid sign errors, making it difficult to trace where calculations went wrong.

For a Year 7 assignment, forgetting the assignment sheet for geography led to confusion about requirements and incomplete planning.

A senior student working on compound interest relied heavily on calculator use without manual checking, missing conceptual understanding.

In primary-level word problems, a tendency to avoid writing full explanations meant answers lacked clarity—especially when units were omitted.

After setbacks with tricky fraction tasks in Year 6 maths, confidence dropped and revision was avoided for harder questions, slowing improvement.

Recent Achievements

One Earlwood tutor noticed a real shift in a Year 9 student's approach to surds: while she was hesitant to attempt questions independently at first, by the end of the session she worked through all the problems on her own and even explained her reasoning out loud.

Another high school student, previously slow with percentage change calculations, now solves them much faster and connects ideas from previous weeks without prompting.

Meanwhile, a Year 5 learner who used to read quietly and wait for correction now reads research material aloud during sessions, double-checks his work independently, and found key information himself for an assignment.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Earlwood Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Primary School.
