Build Confidence: Often, a student's struggle with math is more about a fear of failure than an inability to learn. The first job of a tutor is to create a positive, stress-free environment and show the student that they are capable. This shift in mindset is the foundation for all progress. My strong performance in my engineering Diploma at UTS…

I consider patience and empathy critical in tutors and a deep-seated desire to help the student grow and learn. Additionally, helping the student approach the subject in such a manner that the student's abilities in the subject overall increase, to improve rigour and precision when it comes to mathematics. I am a strong communicator, and I can…

I think the most important thing for a tutor is to be a reliable guide to the students. Every students has their own way of learning and pace of learning. There is no one size fits all when it comes to tutoring. It is important that a tutor is communicating with the students, understand their needs and be there for the student whenever they need…

The most important things a tutor can do for a student is to make them enjoy the subject because they will make them want to work harder in it and achieve higher. My strengths as a tutor is that I am a recent graduate and I am therefore very familiar with the syllabus and could also build a friendship with the…

The most important things for a tutor to do for a student is to be patient, to be a support network for their learning, and to be open to criticism if the teaching style is not what the student wants. Of course, a tutor needs to be good at explaining the material but it is also important to use one’s own experience to give advise especially in…

I can build my students engagement with and appreciation of the subject (many students find school boring or purposeless and I make a point to spark more joy in learning by integrating key notes of relevance into every lesson). I will also assure students that it is okay not to understand something, or to feel unconfident. Struggling with…

I believe that interest is the best teacher, therefore I suppose it is very important for a tutor to bring back students' interests and passions in their studies. If not, the student will only keep seeking help when they are facing the problem and they don't have the intrinsic motivation on studies. However if they are interested and passionate…

One of the most important things is to let students gain confidence in a subject they are struggling with by breaking down concepts into something easy to understand. I believe the most important things a tutor can do for a student is listening to the student in what areas they struggle in, as well as giving a structured lesson and being direct and concise when communicating points across. This then has an effect on the student, engaging them and the tutor to be more pro-active leading to a more efficient…

I think the most important things a tutor can do is to build the student's confidence. Sometimes students may feel afraid to make mistakes even though in fact they know more than they think. Tutor's provide an opportunity for individualised, one-on-one support in a way that the standard classroom cannot offer. I like to be patient and…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is listening to them to truly understand what their needs and goals are. As I am…

Wendy, Earlwood

Inside EarlwoodTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 8 student Alex worked through quadratic expressions, focusing on factorising both monic and non-monic equations using the PSF method, and practiced solving quadratics by completing the square and applying the quadratic formula.

For Year 7, Aimee concentrated on converting between decimals and percentages as well as reviewing mean, mode, median, and range in data sets, rounding off with division practice.

Meanwhile, Year 5 student Cooper tackled converting mixed fractions to improper fractions (and vice versa), along with simplifying fractions using guided examples from class resources.

Recent Challenges

In Year 9 algebra, he skipped showing steps in equations, which hid sign errors, making it difficult to trace where calculations went wrong.

For a Year 7 assignment, forgetting the assignment sheet for geography led to confusion about requirements and incomplete planning.

A senior student working on compound interest relied heavily on calculator use without manual checking, missing conceptual understanding.

In primary-level word problems, a tendency to avoid writing full explanations meant answers lacked clarity—especially when units were omitted.

After setbacks with tricky fraction tasks in Year 6 maths, confidence dropped and revision was avoided for harder questions, slowing improvement.

Recent Achievements

One Earlwood tutor noticed a real shift in a Year 9 student's approach to surds: while she was hesitant to attempt questions independently at first, by the end of the session she worked through all the problems on her own and even explained her reasoning out loud.

Another high school student, previously slow with percentage change calculations, now solves them much faster and connects ideas from previous weeks without prompting.

Meanwhile, a Year 5 learner who used to read quietly and wait for correction now reads research material aloud during sessions, double-checks his work independently, and found key information himself for an assignment.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Earlwood Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Primary School.
