I believe the most important things a tutor can do are build trust, encourage genuine confidence, and teach students how to learn independently. It's not just about helping them get through one subject or assignment, it's about giving them the skills and self-belief they can carry with them into everything else they do. I think my main strengths…

I will not get frustrated and agitated when a student is not understanding a specific topic. Instead, I will try and explain it in many ways until he or she is absolutely confident…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to build the student's confidence and give them both the belief and motivation that they can achieve the academic goals that they have set. I believe a good tutor doesn't purely provide answers, but guides students to think for themselves, developing problem solving skills and…

A tutor possesses many pivotal roles in a student's journey to tertiary levels. I believe the single most crucial contribution a tutor can make is to fan the flame. If a student gives up on their own ability despite genuine interest, then their potential will be lost. A tutor has the unique capability, and responsibility, to recognise and…

I think for a tutor a combination of two things is the best, firstly giving the students confidence as I found that my tutor gave my confidence in my abilities that I previously had not experienced in some subjects which eventually led to my success. Also providing the best ability to teach and foster improvements in knowledge and skills to…

A tutor can make a student love the subject he/she hates. The most important thing for a tutor is to understand the student, his/her interests, aptitude, and what he/she is inclined towards. If you have a basic idea of the student mindset you can develop techniques to make them understand the subject in a way they don't find it hard. Gamification…

A tutor should give the most custom type of teaching to each student as general lectures are also given in school and their is no point in repeating the same. Consistency is the most important in my opinion as some students may face issues learning and I just need to stay consistent with them and maybe even teach them in some other…

The most important thing a tutor can do for their student is to guide them academically and aid their learning outside of their classroom. I believe it is important for tutors to help achieve the students academic goals, and be a mentor that they can rely on anytime. The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to be able to teach them concepts which they will remember for life instead of memorising them for a short period of time. A good tutor can raise interest of the student. Once the student feel interested in the subject, then he/she will be keen on learning new things. In addition, tutoring is more than teaching, and students are more engaged and proactive. As a tutor you need to provide the individual with problem solving skills to allow them to recognise when a situation is difficult and ways in which they can go about the problem or situation in an effective way to gain insight. A tutor should be able to explain concepts in a manner which allows students to understand the concepts and apply it elsewhere. A tutor should assist students in understanding concepts on a deeper level, rather than just rote learning. Furthermore, a tutor should be passionate in what they teach. Empathy is key. If a tutor can show how learning certain topics can help a student in the future, it keeps the student's interest held in the subject for longer. What really helps is to periodically give some positive feedback to the student about their progress - how he or she has improved in the past 3 months, or month, for example. Because of…

Inside EastlakesTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Regan worked on mastering probability concepts, including calculating probabilities and practicing with targeted homework for an upcoming test.

In Year 10, Sara explored creative writing through character development and plot structure, then shifted to planning a discursive presentation by mapping out weekly goals and selecting suitable texts.

Meanwhile, a Year 11 student tackled advanced calculus topics such as integration and the application of differentiation, focusing on solving optimisation problems using worked examples.

Recent Challenges

In Year 11 English, a student's creative writing lacked depth in characterisation—characters felt one-dimensional, limiting the emotional impact of her stories.

For a Year 12 essay, missing or incomplete homework meant feedback on textual analysis and flow could not be provided, delaying improvement. As noted by one tutor: "Homework was sent however was not completed. For feedback and improvement it is extremely crucial she finishes homework."

Meanwhile, a senior maths student struggled to select appropriate formulas in new topics; this confusion often arose when revision focused only on familiar question types rather than broadening problem-solving skills for exams.

Recent Achievements

One Eastlakes tutor noticed a Year 11 student who started the term hesitant to ask questions is now actively seeking clarification on tricky essay topics, even challenging interpretations and linking themes independently—something he'd avoided before.

In another session, a high school maths student who was unsure about maxima and minima at first worked through practice HSC-style problems until she could solve them confidently on her own.

Meanwhile, a younger student recently began writing down feedback after lessons without being prompted and asked for extra practice questions to improve—a big shift from previously staying quiet during reviews.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Mascot Library (incl. the George Hanna Memorial Museum)—or at your child's school (with permission), like Eastlakes Public School.
