The most important thing a math tutor can do for a student is help them build confidence. From my experience, most students understand math but are afraid of it. Being scared of math makes it more likely for students to make mistakes. My HSC maths teacher used to say that to be able to understand mathematics, one must understand the basics of it…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do is make students feel comfortable enough to ask questions without feeling judged. When students aren’t scared of getting things wrong, they actually start understanding the content instead of just memorising answers. Building confidence is just as important as teaching the material, because once…

Being understanding of the student's needs is the duty of the tutor and do your best to improve the student's understanding of school subjects. The tutor needs to be flexible for the student's needs and make adjusts to their timetable and their needs to adjust the homework, as well as the teaching styles so students learn the content. Which means…

I feel that the ability to carefully understand the certain needs and goals of each student and provide particular guidance and assistance a long the way to achieving these goals is crucial in tutoring, rather than…

The most important things a tutor can do for a student, in my opinion, is to be able to listen, provide feedback that the student is able to take on hand and to create an efficient learning environment. To listen to a student's goals, what they are having difficulty with and how to improve upon these difficulties - are very crucial in the role…

Hence, they must cater to one's level of academic proficiency, their learning weaknesses and holes in education to provide a tangible improvement in grades. 1. Teaching engagingly and interestingly: the student should not feel like it is just another class at school, but provide an opportunity for him/her to engage and deliver content in a manner which piques his/her interest. 2. Providing clear explanations: complex content should be broken down and taught according to the student's knowledge level…

I strongly believe the student should be interested in the subject. And I think, it is the role of the tutor to create that interest. The tutor's success is similar to that of a doctor. Develop their understanding of the subject. This means ensuring they understand the process and the mechanism behind a math calculation for example. This will boost their confidence in being able to answer harder questions that require this skill. Particularly for maths, the harder questions are situated in Q15 and Q16. Attaining marks in this…

Inside Elizabeth BayTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Taiki focused on reading comprehension by working through a story, practising phonics to decode unfamiliar words, and then writing sentences using new vocabulary.

In Year 10, Maddison tackled trigonometry concepts such as solving for angles and sides in right-angled triangles—including elevation, depression, and bearings—using class exercises for extra practice.

For Year 11, Jessica concentrated on theoretical versus experimental probability and also reviewed non-linear relationships like parabolas and exponentials ahead of her upcoming exam.

Recent Challenges

In Year 8 maths, one student's reluctance to write out working—"he tries to calculate the entirety of a problem in his head"—led to missed steps and hidden errors, especially in multi-step problems.

For a senior student preparing for exams, messy written work in probability tasks made reviewing answers difficult and slowed down corrections.

Another high schooler repeatedly used the wrong numbers in formulas because she did not check her work step-by-step during quizzes; this meant even strong conceptual understanding was undermined by preventable mistakes.

When students avoided asking teachers for clarification in class, misconceptions persisted longer than necessary.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Elizabeth Bay recently noticed that a Year 10 student, who previously struggled to organise her work, took real initiative by jotting down the specific sections she wanted to review and confidently worked through revision questions on probability and bearings without prompting.

Meanwhile, a Year 8 student who used to skip steps has begun reading each question aloud before answering, which means he now picks up on key details and avoids earlier mistakes—especially when tackling multi-step word problems.

In an upper high school maths session, one student finally tackled factorising quadratics independently after several weeks of hesitation, asking for extra practice questions rather than waiting for help.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Kings Cross Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Vincent's College.
