I think the most important thing, and probably the greatest thing I can give to students is inspiration. My subject knowledge is something they should be able to take for granted. If I can inspire them, then they will go on learning long after their contact with me is ended. In addition, the passion is another vital element for math tutoring. I…

Consistency. I have been a tutor to some students for over a year. My students have achieved long-term improvements in their academics, whether that be improvement in grades, or improved studying habits and note-taking skills. I prefer to explain the learning material in the simplest way and test their understanding through application of their…

The most important thing I think is for the tutor to build confidence in a student. To do this, I believe continual encouragement is required and something I always aim to do. Patience and the ability to remain calm at all times. I am also very persistent and will try a variety of methods that will allow the student to see concepts from a variety…

In my perspective, providing confidence is the most important thing a tutor can do for a student. The majority of people would hire a tutor is because of one's unsatisfactory performance towards the subject. Confidence would increase the understanding process for most of the people. Furthermore, to excel in the subject, the student has to work…

Teach genuinely, give out all information they know of the subject. To choose sharing knowledge over money. To have patients to deal with any kind of student since each student could have a different speed of learning or picking up. My strengths would be that I am a young, patient teacher who can teach any type of student. I have the ability to…

I understand that teachers don't always have time to help students one-on-one and that tutors can help bridge the gap. I believe that learning is an exponential process, so a small victory in a tutoring session can lead to enormous benefits in the student's future. I am passionate about enabling students to maximise their…

The most important things that one can do for a student is make the learning material relatable to them. Which means that giving real world examples and relating the material to something of importance. I have been a student for most of my life, so I relate a lot to the students needs and how to help them in learning. This I think is my greatest…

The most important thing is to fully understand the doubts of the student and their lack of understanding in different areas of a subject. It is then necessary to device a personalised plan of action for that student, to strengthen those concepts and help them gain confidence in themselves and their abilities. This is the most crucial thing a…

Instil in a student a love of learning; teach them how to learn and how to manage their own education. It is relatively easy to study enough to get good marks in an exam, but having a positive attitude and active approach towards learning leads to much better information retention and better outcomes in the future, when the student is on their…

The most important things a tutor can do for a student, in my opinion, are to cultivate a deep understanding of the subject matter and to inspire a love for learning. This involves going beyond simply solving problems or answering questions, but rather, helping students develop critical thinking skills and a genuine interest in the topic.…

I believe a tutor can have tremendous effects on the self confidence of a student and his ways of learning. I am a very approachable tutor and I mostly have my own ways to approach a problem. One of the most important things a tutor can do for a student is to be able to explain how to solve problems in several different ways, particularly if a student is struggling to understand how to solve it the first time. These problem solving skills will help them in other areas as well, such as chemistry and physics. My main strength as a tutor…

Inside ElsternwickTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Liliane worked on addition and subtraction in money scenarios, along with telling time on an analog clock.

In Year 10, Celia reviewed trigonometry concepts including sin/cos/tan and Pythagoras' theorem using worked examples, then practiced rearranging algebraic equations.

Year 11 student Bonnie focused on logarithmic equations and explored chemistry content involving valence electron shells, breaking down problems step by step.

Recent Challenges

In Year 10 Maths, one student approached rearranging algebraic equations by jumping straight to answers without breaking down steps—"needs to break down the order to solve the problems," a tutor noted—which led to confusion with signs and structure.

Meanwhile, in Year 11 English, another avoided planning essay paragraphs, which made sentence flow inconsistent and transitions awkward during practice essays.

For a Year 2 learner, attention wandered often in multi-step maths tasks, causing key instructions on place value and addition facts to be missed.

In each case, gaps in process or focus left errors unnoticed until review or feedback arrived.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Elsternwick noticed a big shift with Lara (Year 11), who now arrives each week with her own questions, having realised she gets more out of sessions when she pinpoints where she's stuck—something she never did before.

In Year 10 maths, Celia made real strides by not just memorising laws but confidently explaining how to expand and factorise equations on her own, even after struggling with perfect squares last term.

Meanwhile, Nushara (Year 4) finished all her homework on telling the time correctly and read aloud with clear expression during the session.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Elsternwick Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Adass Israel School - Orrong Road Campus.
