In the past, I have had bad experiences with tutors and what I have learnt to never do which occurred to me is express frustration or put down a student. I remember being 7 years old and having a texture thrown at me for not being able to say a word. From these terrible experiences I underwent as a child and pre-teen I have learnt the importance…

Instil them with confidence! Breaking down those confidence barriers a student might have could result in them tackling a question they would have never attempted otherwise. This also means persevering when they get answers wrong - they know they'll get there eventually. Another really important part of being an english tutor is providing the…

Helping them feel to comfortable to make mistakes, and then to learn from said mistakes. I believe that the most important things which an english tutor can do for a student are these: to stress the need for forward planning and for regular timetables; to encourage where necessary; to break down large tasks into manageable portions; and to clarify hitherto obscure matters. I think that my strengths as a tutor are these: I've shown…

The most important thing an english tutor can do for a student is to give them a sense of confidence when they return the classroom after having something explained to them in a way they can understand. Ideally the end goal a tutor should have is for a student to be able to understand concepts in a subject by themselves, without the explanation of…

I consider the most important thing an english tutor can do with a student is have patience. I think patience underlines all the critical aspects regarding tutoring. To engage effectively with a student, it has to happen naturally, it can't be forced. It does take a bit of time to understand what kind of teaching style a student will respond well…

In my opinion, apart from imparting educational concepts, tutors play a key role in making students feel more confident about where they stand with their learnings. If a student feels comfortable in knowing that they can take any query or concern to their tutor without fretting, the tutor is successful! My areas of strength are definitely patience…

I believe that understanding is the most important thing an english tutor must do for a student. Without comprehension, the tutor would not be able to communicate with the student in the same language, making it impossible for the tutor to address the issue the student is having and come up with solutions to help the student's condition. I am…

I think the best thing an english tutor can do for a student is to empathise with them. Every student has different learning capabilities. I believe being able to provide individualised instructions is a crucial part of being a tutor. Tailoring teaching methods to suit the student's learning style, pace, and preferences ensures a more effective and personalised learning experience. Inside ElsternwickTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Liliane worked on addition and subtraction in money scenarios, along with telling time on an analog clock.

In Year 10, Celia reviewed trigonometry concepts including sin/cos/tan and Pythagoras' theorem using worked examples, then practiced rearranging algebraic equations.

Year 11 student Bonnie focused on logarithmic equations and explored chemistry content involving valence electron shells, breaking down problems step by step.

Recent Challenges

In Year 10 Maths, one student approached rearranging algebraic equations by jumping straight to answers without breaking down steps—"needs to break down the order to solve the problems," a tutor noted—which led to confusion with signs and structure.

Meanwhile, in Year 11 English, another avoided planning essay paragraphs, which made sentence flow inconsistent and transitions awkward during practice essays.

For a Year 2 learner, attention wandered often in multi-step maths tasks, causing key instructions on place value and addition facts to be missed.

In each case, gaps in process or focus left errors unnoticed until review or feedback arrived.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Elsternwick noticed a big shift with Lara (Year 11), who now arrives each week with her own questions, having realised she gets more out of sessions when she pinpoints where she's stuck—something she never did before.

In Year 10 maths, Celia made real strides by not just memorising laws but confidently explaining how to expand and factorise equations on her own, even after struggling with perfect squares last term.

Meanwhile, Nushara (Year 4) finished all her homework on telling the time correctly and read aloud with clear expression during the session.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Elsternwick Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Adass Israel School - Orrong Road Campus.
