What do I enjoy most about tutoring? 😁

As a tutor, I enjoy the moment when something finally clicks for a student. I have tutored Maths and English for a few years and it still feels great every time. Some students think they are just “bad at Mathsâ€, so it is nice to watch that belief slowly change. Every student is different too. I volunteer with Embrace Education, tutoring siblings in English and Maths and each needs a different approach. Figuring that out is what I enjoy most. To me, tutoring is not only about grades. It is about making learning less scary and showing students they can do more than they think.

My Strengths as Tutor 💪

My biggest strength is listening before I explain. I notice the little things students struggle with, even when they do not say it because the problem is often not where they think it is. I am patient and explain in simple words, which I learnt from tutoring students who speak English as an additional language. I have made personalized handwriting and spelling worksheets and step-by-step Maths examples. My TEFL and TESL certifications and engineering background help with language and analytical subjects. I also prepare extra outside sessions because I truly care about each student’s progress.

Most important things I can do for a student 🏅

One of the most important things a tutor can do is make students comfortable enough to say, “I do not understand,†without hesitating. Often students struggle not because they are incapable, but because they have not yet found an explanation that makes sense to them. A good tutor listens carefully and will explain the same concept five different ways if needed. I also think it matters to celebrate small improvements, give honest encouragement and help students become independent learners. My goal is not to have students depend on me, but to build the confidence to figure things out themselves.
