To support and give great motivation to the student is the most important thing. Having the thought that everybody can learn and be able to success in learning if the student found interest in the subject. I believe that every subject has the potential to be made fun and exciting for any student, and so naturally the tutor should be able to be inspiring and excited to teach and learn alongside their pupil. Alongside this, tutors need to be adaptable, being willing to communicate to different students based on their levels and understanding, while…

I believe it is important to understand the student's weaknesses and strengths before starting to teach them. I have come across a common problem with students, which is that they often jump straight into trying to solve a problem without fully understanding the theory/basics first. Hence, I try to first help them understand the basics then go…

I believe that it is important for the tutor to foster a casual and fun relationship with the student - one where they can connect with more than just academia. In addition, I also believe that it is crucial for a tutor to teach the student good problem solving strategies because the tutor cannot always be with them. Finally, I believe that…

Explaining the concepts clearly and easily along with appropriate examples are the must for a tutor. But, more importantly, a tutor should help students cultivate good habits like hard work, discipline, confidence, time management etc. By doing so, a student not only grows academically but also personally. And this can help them in the future. I…

First and foremost, I would argue that the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to provide motivation and encouragement; cultivating the student's desire to learn and succeed. If this is achieved, academic success simply becomes a by-product. Secondly, a tutor must act as a resource that complements learning within a school…

The most important things a tutor can do for a student would be, firstly helping the student develop understandings of the subject at a fundamental level and then building up to a mastery from there. In my opinion, the most important thing a private tutor can do for a student is give them the opportunity to make mistakes in a safe environment where they feel they won't be judged. Building confidence and supporting students to increase their self-esteem won't only help them in their school subjects, but is a valuable skill that will last them a…

Liz, Elwood

Inside ElwoodTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Frankie practised solving simultaneous equations using both elimination and substitution methods, as well as reviewing strategies for tackling measurement and geometry revision questions.

In Year 10, Isla focused on expanding and simplifying algebraic expressions, alongside strengthening her understanding of negative numbers through step-by-step practice.

For Year 12, Alice completed a detailed review of matrix division and the identity matrix before moving on to advanced applications with transition matrices in preparation for upcoming assessment tasks.

Recent Challenges

A significant amount of knowledge...was lost over the last week due to incompletion of homework for a Year 11 student who missed assignments on credit card and interest problems, resulting in noticeable gaps during a weekly quiz.

In VCE English, another student arrived with only half their assigned essay finished, citing busy SAC periods but not communicating in advance.

For a Year 12 mathematics lesson, skipping careful reading meant important details in compound interest questions were overlooked, requiring repeated correction.

Meanwhile, one junior secondary student relied heavily on step-by-step memorisation for algebra instead of developing conceptual understanding, which slowed progress during multi-step problems.

Recent Achievements

One Elwood tutor noticed a real shift in a Year 11 student who used to hesitate with matrix operations—she's now creating her own process for multiplication and tackling advanced transition matrices almost independently.

Meanwhile, a Year 10 student who struggled with algebra is expanding brackets more accurately and now works through negative numbers with less prompting than before.

In English, Will (Year 12) has started asking for new vocabulary during sessions and independently picks out errors in his writing—a big step up from earlier weeks when he'd avoid revising drafts.

Last session, he submitted his homework on time and complete.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as St Kilda Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Columba's School.
