By breaking down difficult material and personalising lessons, students can better understand the content at their own pace. By helping them feel confident and supported, it encourages active engagement and…

The most important thing, is for the tutor to inspire the student to learn. There is nothing greater than education and as Nelson Mandela once said, "Education is the most powerful weapon with which you can use to change the world" I'd inspire my students to be successful and to create a love for learning, so they will always keep on learning…

The most important things a tutor can do is to listen to their student. Whether they need to adjust their techniques, or go more slowly, etc. The tutor should always be attendant to their student's needs and keep track of their progress. Positive reinforcement is also very important, as uplifting and encouraging your student is more beneficial…

A tutor needs to be apt at recognising where a student is at and how they learn, and able to accomodate for a students needs accordingly. They also need to be supportive and encouraging, providing constructive criticism where needed whilst also recognising the students progression and achievements. It is crucial for a tutor to create a safe space or a safe bond with students so they feel comfortable asking questions. If students do not ask questions then the whole teaching process becauses inefficient. I believe the most important things a tutor can do for a student are to be friendly and make sure they feel welcome. It's also important to make sure the student is understanding the content and if they aren't to reiterate the points or try to teach them in another way. My strengths as a tutor are that I am highly organised and prepared, I am very…

The most important thing in tutoring is patience...lots of patience. It's often the case that repeating a concept - however many times, and sometimes in different ways - helps the student really come to grips with it. I think the mark of a good teacher is how much repetition they can tolerate in the course of their instruction. My main strength is…

I consider the most important that a tutor can do is able to do is simply a topic or break down said topic into digestible portions such that the student is able to catch onto the content of the work easily and effectively. With a good understanding of the topic and the skills to explain its contents to the student, the tutor ensures that the…

I believe taking time out to understand and know where the student needs help or is struggling is the most important factor. By finding out the parts that they may lack and need improvement is what allows a tutor to focus on teaching the student in a more individualised and specific to the student. I think my strengths as a tutor belong to the…

Inside Emu PlainsTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Alexia focused on understanding decimal places and reviewed her recent test to identify specific mistakes.

Year 9 student Alexia worked through practice questions on composite shapes, kites, trapezoids, circles and arcs, as well as calculating the volume of triangular prisms.

In Year 12, James tackled exam-style problems involving probability—distinguishing between independent and non-mutually exclusive events—and practiced key statistics skills such as finding mode, median, range, and interquartile range.

Recent Challenges

A Year 11 student preparing for HSC maths avoided showing working in series questions, making it hard to pinpoint where misunderstandings occurred—"he wasn't naturally seeing what the question was asking," as one tutor observed.

In Year 9 algebra revision, incomplete homework meant missed opportunities to clarify misconceptions before a test.

Meanwhile, a Year 7 student often practiced only familiar decimal and Pythagoras problems, leaving harder topics untouched.

During calculus applications with a senior student, fatigue led to skipped written steps and confusion in worded velocity problems; this left gaps when tackling multi-step exam tasks under pressure.

Recent Achievements

One Emu Plains tutoring session saw a Year 12 student, Alistair, shift from just listening during calculus lessons to actively working out equations on his own and even spending extra time practising his calculus rules at home.

Meanwhile, in Year 11 chemistry, Jack moved from needing help to intuitively finding where to look for answers during reaction questions—he's now choosing problem-solving paths independently.

For a younger win, Rumaysa (Year 6) has gone from rushing through maths problems with mistakes to deliberately writing each step and double-checking her work before moving on.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Penrith City Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Our Lady of The Way Primary School.
