A tutor can be many things for a student. Not only can they be an avenue where they can learn in a different way which may be the student's way of learning, but also they can be a mentor for them in that they can give different insights and views, as well as being someone who listen, and if wanted, suggestions and advice. I can explain concepts…

I think as a tutor, the most important thing you can do for a student is help them acquire "tools" for their metaphorical toolbox. Each concept learnt within a subject is a tool that they can use to tackle a bigger problem within the exam setting. I think letting the student practice using these tools is an important part of learning process,…

I think the most important aspect of being a responsible and helpful tutor is being patient with the student. Every student has a different understanding ability so being patient and explaining the task clearly to the student is very important. I believe I can understand each student's weakness and strength, understanding their psychology and…

The most important things I can provided to the student are an approachable, enriching learning environment. An enriching learning environment is like a petri-dish full of nutrients. The role of tutors is to help the students absorb as much of these 'nutrients' (i.e. knowledge and skills) as they can in an effective and enjoyable way. I believe my…

When I was a student, I had many tutors who helped me as a mentor and guided me through not just schoolwork but also the ups and downs in friendships with other students and relations with teachers. Hence, I believe that the most important things a tutor can do for a student is to be there emotionally and help them grow as a person. Although…

Students come to tutors to be better at what they are studying and achieve higher grades in tests and exams. I believe the most important things that tutor can do for students is first to identify what they need help with then help them with best of our abilities so that students understand what they previously didn't and prepare them to achieve…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to teach the student how to approach problems and questions on their own, such that they are not dependent on anyone when they encounter a difficult problem in the future. For example, to teach them how to look at a problem in many different ways, to reverse the problem and work…

I personally think that, it is important to check up on the students more than study check ups. As tutors are one of the main people that students meet during their high-school life, it is important to check up on their mental health and how much they are finding difficulties in their subjects. From this it'll allow me to be more closer to…

A tutor should maintain a comfortable yet professional relationship with the students, so that they can comfortably express their opinions/questions whenever they have the need to. The role of a tutor is not to solve problems for the student, but rather, their role is to equip the student with the necessary tools for them to solve problems independently. Build their confidence; I think once a student has confidence in themselves, and trust that they have what it takes to tackle even a small part of a subject, their view of that subject completely shifts, and most often it makes learning more enjoyable. That inner confidence also makes it more likely they work harder and succeed, as well as overall…

My name is Capri & i am 10 years old in year 5. Abi (my tutor) started tutoring me just before Naplan testing this year. Abi has given me the tools i needed to over come my hurdles with all things Maths. Wether it be split/jump or compensation strategies to fractions or division. Abi gets excited to show me new ways to solve and i no longer feel anxiety when it is time for maths in the classroom at school. Within 2 months i now actually feel confident when embarking on tests - thank you Abi.

Inside EppingTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 3 student Aanya worked on multiplication and addition strategies using visual aids, while Year 10 student Riya focused on the nature of light in Physics, exploring properties like reflection and refraction through guided discussion.

For Year 12, Kevin revised equations of a line, perpendicular bisectors, and parallel lines in Mathematics, practicing with both formula applications and graphic calculator skills to solve simultaneous equations.

Recent Challenges

A Year 11 student working on special relativity relied heavily on calculators for basic algebra, which slowed progress in grasping underlying concepts—he defaulted to calculator use even for simple rearrangements.

In Year 8 mathematics, homework completion was inconsistent; one student missed times-tables practice multiple weeks running, leading to lost lesson time reviewing old ground rather than building new skills.

For a Year 6 science task, rushed short-answer responses lacked key vocabulary and clear explanations, as seen when only partial definitions were included. In these moments, momentum stalled and confidence wavered with each unfinished or unclear piece of work.

Recent Achievements

In Epping, a tutor observed that one Year 10 student who previously hesitated to ask questions now regularly checks her understanding during biology sessions. She has even begun asking for clarification on homeostasis and negative feedback loops.

During a Year 8 maths session, a student who struggled with timed division tests managed to solve all problems within the set time, using multiple methods without errors.

A younger primary student surprised her tutor by moving confidently from simple addition to tackling two-digit subtraction word problems independently, explaining each step aloud as she worked through them.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Epping Branch Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Sydney Science College.
