The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to be supportive and encouraging of the abilities they already have, while pushing them to learn and achieve as much as they can. I believe my biggest strengths to be my patience as a teacher, and my ability to tackle different problems from various angles. I find it better to spend time…

Most important thing you can do for a student is not to teach a lesson, but give them a reason to learn the lesson. Make everything a piece of cake and fun. Teaching can be mostly boring and overwhelming especially when you are at the receiving end. I would know as i have always had trouble grasping concepts presented by the so called qualified…

I believe it depends highly on the students understanding and their level of education. However in saying this, the ability to create interest and enjoyment in a subject is the most important. As from my own experience enjoying a subject and being interested in the topic helps greatly in motivating a person to understand and achieve well in it. I…

Aside from the knowledge that you will share, it is patience, understanding the intellectual capacity of the student as well as their behavior are the things to consider to be a tutor. I believe the most important thing a tutor can do is to wear students' shoes, which means to understand their strengths, weaknesses, and learning styles. Once we recognise how each student learns best, we can adapt our explanations and materials to support them more effectively. I used to struggle with some of these subjects myself, which helps me…

A tutor must make themselves approachable and be a role model figure to their students. As someone they have a more personalized time space with compared to their school teachers, the students are often likely to look up to their tutors as figures of inspiration and personal ceilings. It is our duty as these figures to not just live up to their…

I believe that a tutor should be friendly with the student so that the student can freely discuss the problems with his/her tutor. I believe patience is important as everyone learns and works at a different pace so being able to cope with that is important. Moreover, it is crucial that a tutor is open-minded and non-judgemental as the concept of learning is different for everyone. Further, a tutor should be organized and behave professionally to set out the aura of a good…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do is guide a student. Just watering is not enough but should help the students to grow his roots so that the student grasps the concepts not just answer some previously seen examples. I believe it is the confidence that tutors can develop in their students, so that the stress and nervousness is lessened when it comes to taking the end-of-year exams, or even just a simple test. Every student has different expectations from a tutor and thus the most important thing might vary from student to student. As for me, the most crucial thing should be improving their academic performances while arousing their interest in studying. To be specific, these are what I consider responsible tutorial behaviors. 1. Do sufficient pre-class preparation and make notes for every key point that you are going to talk about in detail. 2. Be patient in class. Think…

Inside EssendonTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Olivia worked on mean, median, and mode in statistics as well as interpreting and constructing stem-and-leaf plots.

In Year 10, Jack focused on graphing sine and cosine functions along with exploring transformations of trigonometric graphs using sketching techniques.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Mia reviewed derivatives and stationary points before practicing different methods to find maximum and minimum values in calculus contexts.

Recent Challenges

In Year 11 Physics, a student found it challenging to relate work and energy concepts—"developing the intuition to relate work to change in energy" remained a sticking point when applying formulas in new problems.

For Year 12 Maths, time management in multiple-choice sections became an issue; as noted, "extra minutes were lost re-checking easy questions instead of tackling harder ones."

A Year 7 student's written maths work was often messy and confusing: "formatting on the page, he confuses himself," leading to misplaced numbers during algebra steps.

In primary years, one student's frustration with fractions led to moments where motivation dropped and progress stalled mid-lesson.

Recent Achievements

One Essendon tutor noticed a Year 11 student who had been hesitant with trigonometric graph transformations now independently sketches trig functions and solves transformed equations, something he'd previously avoided without guidance.

A Year 8 student who struggled to organise writing has started using a wider range of sentence starters and now structures essays more clearly, no longer repeating the same phrases.

Meanwhile, a younger primary student recently read and entered data into a stem-and-leaf plot on his own for the first time—he even calculated mean, median, and range without prompting.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Sam Merrifeld (Essendon) Public Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Penleigh & Essendon Grammar School - Essendon Campus.
