I think a tutor plays a significant role in making learning enjoyable. By making learning approachable, students can develop the enthusiasm to learn new things and allow for growth in their studies. I believe what matters is how much students understand the content and not just remembering how much they learn. I believe my strength is to encourage…

A good tutor will be able to make the student feel that, studying is similar to any other activities, and that they can enjoy it while gaining new knowledge without a hassle. With enjoyment from studying, these students will gain…

A tutor should be approachable and they should encourage students to ask each and every question they have in mind. A tutor should also be able to act like a mentor for educational and professional guide. However, it is very important for tutors to keep a professional boundary in mind. Taking their time to explain a method or topic properly in a way that the students understand. I think this is important because if the students don't clearly understand the process in which they need to apply it, then the method isn't useful. But that method is not going to be the same for each student My skills would be my patience and…

Being a tutor is about being genuine and sincere in teaching, and to realize that we play a major role in being a witness to the students' growth. Our job is to give a pathway for students to be engaged in the subject, give a reason to why they should learn it, and for them to accomplish great things in the future. Teach not only concepts but how…

For me, every student may have a different receptive ability. Therefore, a tutor need to be patient for the first time to understand their students. And then, try to teach them for understanding the whole picture, the fundamentals rather than showing them the ways to solve a particular exercise without any combination with other knowledge. Passion…

Local Reviews

All went well with Sharmin and James got a lot from the sessions.
Sharmin, Moonee Ponds

Inside Essendon WestTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Liam worked on decimals with addition and subtraction, using number lines to visualise calculations.

For Year 9, Olivia tackled factorisation of monic quadratics and solved area problems involving algebraic expressions.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Ethan revised trigonometry concepts—focusing on the Cartesian plane—and practised finding equations of lines using real-world examples from past assessments.

Recent Challenges

A Year 10 student relied heavily on a formula sheet for finance problems—when asked to write out the interest formula from context, he paused and searched his notes instead. As one tutor observed, "he goes to his formula sheet for questions that in my opinion can be written... just by knowing how to use maths."

Meanwhile, a Year 8 student struggled with structuring her working out for index laws, leading to confusion during revision.

In Year 12 Physics, slow rearrangement of formulas and mixing up indices often forced extra time spent reworking steps rather than deepening understanding of concepts like relativity.

Recent Achievements

One Essendon West tutor noticed a big shift with a Year 11 student who used to get stuck on physics formula work—now he's confidently picking the right formulas and manipulating them without hesitation.

A Year 10 student recently tackled factorising trinomials in her head and started checking her answers independently, instead of waiting for prompts.

Meanwhile, a younger primary student has gone from guessing at addition to carrying out sums in his head perfectly, showing real focus during sessions.

Last week, Sam handed in an essay that received strong teacher feedback after previously struggling to express his ideas clearly.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Moonee Valley Libraries—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Bernard's College.
