I think the tutor should understand what a student's basics are and what he initially knows about the topic. He can try to ask him if he/she doesn't understand the things which were taught. The tutor should be able to motivate the student and make sure learning is not a burden and it's all about enjoying the subjects which he has too. As a tutor,…

By creating a positive and supportive environment, students feel comfortable asking questions and taking risks. Tailoring lessons to how a student best absorbs information keeps…

I believe the most important things a tutor can do for a student are to provide guidance, build confidence, and foster a love for learning. A tutor should make the environment comfortable for the student to ask questions, make mistakes, and learn at his or her own pace. It is also equally as important to adapt to each student's unique learning…

In my opinion, the most important thing a tutor can do is to transfer the positive energy about learning to the student. A good tutor should also create an appropriate learning path that leads to the student's goals and achievements. I try to understand the student's abilities and needs. I can create an appropriate teaching strategy by building a…

The most important thing a tutor should do for a student is to make the concepts clear for a particular topic instead of just mugging up the concept. Also the tutor must be able to solve all queries by patiently listening. I am good at explaining a concept in the most easy way available. Also I first listen to the students problem so that I can…

A tutor can offer student great flexibility in teaching materials and methods that may not be available in a classroom setting. Going through the student's difficulties one by one, with personal attention, makes a significant difference to a learning environment. I believe that as a tutor, what I can help with most is finding out the missing links in the knowledge network of my students and helping them to make those up. I see a tutor as someone who can motivate students to learn and build the students' confidence to recognize their strengths. Like planting a tree, it may take sometime for teaching to be rewarding but it has a great impact as a tutor get a chance to contribute to a positive change in students' life. I see myself as a communicative, friendly,…

Tutoring is not always about assisting student academic needs, but also to establish confidence in future studies, from junior year maths, to VCE. Or even VCE to University. The most important thing in teaching is to make the student believe that they will surpass any goals they set their minds into. All went well with Sharmin and James got a lot from the sessions.
Sharmin, Moonee Ponds

Inside Essendon WestTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Liam worked on decimals with addition and subtraction, using number lines to visualise calculations.

For Year 9, Olivia tackled factorisation of monic quadratics and solved area problems involving algebraic expressions.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Ethan revised trigonometry concepts—focusing on the Cartesian plane—and practised finding equations of lines using real-world examples from past assessments.

Recent Challenges

A Year 10 student relied heavily on a formula sheet for finance problems—when asked to write out the interest formula from context, he paused and searched his notes instead. As one tutor observed, "he goes to his formula sheet for questions that in my opinion can be written... just by knowing how to use maths."

Meanwhile, a Year 8 student struggled with structuring her working out for index laws, leading to confusion during revision.

In Year 12 Physics, slow rearrangement of formulas and mixing up indices often forced extra time spent reworking steps rather than deepening understanding of concepts like relativity.

Recent Achievements

One Essendon West tutor noticed a big shift with a Year 11 student who used to get stuck on physics formula work—now he's confidently picking the right formulas and manipulating them without hesitation.

A Year 10 student recently tackled factorising trinomials in her head and started checking her answers independently, instead of waiting for prompts.

Meanwhile, a younger primary student has gone from guessing at addition to carrying out sums in his head perfectly, showing real focus during sessions.

Last week, Sam handed in an essay that received strong teacher feedback after previously struggling to express his ideas clearly.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Moonee Valley Libraries—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Bernard's College.
