Beyond academic assistance, I think the most important things a tutor can do for a student is offer guidance and support to students while they are navigating challenges, and also help them develop effective study habits and problem-solving skills. This includes skills such as time management or organizational skills, as well as techniques for…

It is to empower students to believe in themselves - whatever we do in life, it is 80% psychology and 20% skills. They will learn to experiment to find out a routine that works best for them : learning new concepts + revising + deliberate practising. I am highly organised, enthusiastic and personable. I will walk through with the student the…

Tutoring is not always about assisting student academic needs, but also to establish confidence in future studies, from junior year maths, to VCE. Or even VCE to University. Being a tutor means guiding students to trust their own abilities, develop their own effective study method, and to approach challenges with resilience rather than fear.…

I believe that the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is addressing what the student struggles with the most, to focus on those areas that the student will be well-rounded. My strength in tutoring is that I will listen as to what the child struggles with, either from the child or from the parent, and then trying to deal with that…

In my opinion successful tutors build strong, personal relationships with their students. Also tutors listen and communicate early and often with parents and teachers. I am the type pf person who is willing to put as much as effort as possible to get the student satisfactory grades. I am also kind and doesn't get furstrated when…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do is build a student's confidence. When students feel comfortable asking questions and making mistakes, they're much more willing to learn. A great tutor also adapts their teaching style to each student and helps them develop problem-solving skills, rather than just memorising answers. Good…

A tutor should provide comprehensive feedback for students once they understand specific problems students are having. They perhaps can offer solutions to problems students are struggling with. I have familiarised myself with and completed the VCE courses and STEM subjects, so I would have a decent understanding of how to work with students…

As a tutor, I consider it essential to establish a positive connection not only with the students but also with their parents. In my high school days, i went to alot of tutors and i learned the difference between a good and a bad tutor. Bad tutors i believe stay within the box, afraid to go out and expose the students true potential. A good tutor can not only help the student keep on track of school work and assist in any difficulties the student may have, but also push…

Not only teaching a subject, but making they more confident and independent. For me, the best teachers/tutors that I had were those that showed me the importance of having a "problem solving" mentality, instead of simply learning how to get some questions right. All went well with Sharmin and James got a lot from the sessions.
Sharmin, Moonee Ponds

Inside Essendon WestTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Liam worked on decimals with addition and subtraction, using number lines to visualise calculations.

For Year 9, Olivia tackled factorisation of monic quadratics and solved area problems involving algebraic expressions.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Ethan revised trigonometry concepts—focusing on the Cartesian plane—and practised finding equations of lines using real-world examples from past assessments.

Recent Challenges

A Year 10 student relied heavily on a formula sheet for finance problems—when asked to write out the interest formula from context, he paused and searched his notes instead. As one tutor observed, "he goes to his formula sheet for questions that in my opinion can be written... just by knowing how to use maths."

Meanwhile, a Year 8 student struggled with structuring her working out for index laws, leading to confusion during revision.

In Year 12 Physics, slow rearrangement of formulas and mixing up indices often forced extra time spent reworking steps rather than deepening understanding of concepts like relativity.

Recent Achievements

One Essendon West tutor noticed a big shift with a Year 11 student who used to get stuck on physics formula work—now he's confidently picking the right formulas and manipulating them without hesitation.

A Year 10 student recently tackled factorising trinomials in her head and started checking her answers independently, instead of waiting for prompts.

Meanwhile, a younger primary student has gone from guessing at addition to carrying out sums in his head perfectly, showing real focus during sessions.

Last week, Sam handed in an essay that received strong teacher feedback after previously struggling to express his ideas clearly.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Moonee Valley Libraries—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Bernard's College.
