Additionally, creating a supportive and motivating environment fosters curiosity and a love for learning. The most important things a tutor can do for a student is to not give all the answers or talk about specific or complicated concepts for an extended period of time, but instead, find how the student learns best and teach this way. Listening, understanding and providing constructive feedback further can additionally help both parties in learning.…

Finding other ways of working out a problem. If something has been said and isn’t ‘going in’ we can try a visual approach or written down approach, whatever works for the student . Being patient I think is very important, not getting frustrated with the student and using positive language, for example ‘good try’ or ‘nearly there’.…

I believe it is extremely important to convey the importance of education to each student as well as the value of each of our time. I find this leads to more engaged students who achieve greater results. I also believe it is pivotal to create a safe learning environment where students can ask questions and satisfy their curiosity. I am able to…

I believe the most important thing about a tutor is being able to provide self-confidence for the student. I do this through encouragement catered both individually and to the group (if there is one). I have found that when students believe they have the ability to complete the question, they are more likely to ask questions and understand the…

I believe the most important things a tutor can do for a student is give the student the support and assistance they need in ways that their classroom teachers cannot. Tutoring, for me, is a way to fill in the gaps that teachers can't reach, by giving these students individualised support. I think giving these students the confidence to answer or…

The most important things a tutor can do for a student is to make them feel comfortable and to help them feel like learning is not a chore but a good experience. Being positive, patient and encouraging is also a very important trait for a tutor. I have a lot of experience in nannying/babysitting so, therefore, have the ability to effectively…

I find that a healthy, positive and communicative friendship with the student is crucial to them progressing. It's important to be patient and ensure you can work with all personality types and children of all ages. It's also important that tutors are prepared with teaching methods and material to help the students. They should be proactive in…

Most importantly to a student a tutor is there to provide a student with the most positive, educational experience that suits the student's needs. A tutor must be adaptable to different learning styles and needs, adjusting to what is most beneficial to the student. Learn with the student. I am striving to be a better person each day, with it, comes humility. I believe that if you come to the student appearing human and able to make mistakes (as I am not a robot), the student will understand that I am not intimidating nor a machine, but rather human just like they are. Building a strong and humane connection…

The most important thing to me is creating the networks for students to think for and teach themselves whenever our time is up. It's the classic saying, "give a man a fish he'll eat for a day, teach a man to fish and he'll eat for his whole life". A tutor should, like any good teacher, provide the student with the tools to critically evaluate…

Empathy is key. If a tutor can show how learning certain topics can help a student in the future, it keeps the student's interest held in the subject for longer. What really helps is to periodically give some positive feedback to the student about their progress - how he or she has improved in the past 3 months, or month, for example. Because of…

I consider the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to be patient and remember that everyone learns at their own pace, in their own way. Tutors can provide practice papers, positive feedback, ways of improving to the student. The aim is to not make the student feel as if they are unable to achieve the goal, but to allow them to…

Helping children realise their full potential. It's important to turn negatives into positives for example, praising a child and making sure they know they have improved. Inside EveleighTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Olivia practised converting between fractions, decimals, and percentages and also worked on finding percentages of quantities in everyday contexts.

Year 8 student Mason focused on expanding and factorising algebraic expressions as well as solving quadratic equations using the completing the square method.

Meanwhile, Year 9 student Aisha tackled trigonometric identities and began introductory differentiation, reinforcing both with targeted practice questions.

Recent Challenges

A Year 9 student showed a tendency to "jump to what he thinks is the answer—often a guess if he doesn't follow a logical process," especially in pattern and word problems.

In Year 7, one learner often avoided writing working out on paper, preferring mental calculation, which led to repeated basic errors ("Writing his working out on paper rather than doing it all in his head").

At senior level, hesitation with new types of questions surfaced: as noted in Year 11, "she hesitates to try and asks me how to do it rather than try it herself first." This can leave students feeling uncertain when independent problem-solving is required.

Recent Achievements

One Eveleigh tutor noticed a big shift with a Year 11 student who, after struggling to complete differentiation problems independently, managed to work through tricky questions on her own and even explained new methods back to the tutor.

In another high school session, a Year 10 student—who used to rush through area and perimeter questions without checking—has started pausing to think through each step before answering, leading to more accurate solutions.

Meanwhile, a younger student has begun asking for help when stuck rather than guessing quietly, showing much more openness during problem-solving.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Newtown Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Central Sydney Intensive English High School.
