A tutor is a guide to show the right path. Students might stumble a lot, but tutor should hold him up, stand by him and show the right direction. Never giving up on a student, looking for opportunities to advance their skill is what a tutor should always do. I try to explain things from the student's perspective. For example, a gamer might…

"I think one of the most important things a tutor can do is create a supportive and non-judgmental environment where students feel safe to ask questions and make mistakes. Learning is often about trial and error, and if a student is too nervous to speak up, they miss out on the chance to grow. Beyond just helping them understand the content, a…

The most important thing that a tutor can do is help the student build a genuine understanding of the material, rather than just having them memorize the answers. What this means in practice is asking the kinds of questions that push them to actually think, being patient when concepts take a bit of time to land and adjusting the explanations until…

I think having confidence in their thought process. Some children know the concept but don't have the confidence in their skills to apply it because they are scared of getting it wrong. When gradually over a couple of months you change that, that to me is knowing I did a good job I think patience would be my strength, explaining the same concept…

Help the students to reach their goal. For example, if a student want to pass the test with certain grade, then me as a tutor must try my best to make the student reach their goal and the tutor must make the process fun not stressful. Encourage them to pursue their dreams. Teach them to be lifelong learners. I believe you have completely understood the concept when you can simplify it entirely. So, the student should totally grasp the concepts at hand. A tutor can help the student realize their passions, and help them achieve it. Making the students interested in the subject by…

I believe following up with students is the best way to create accountability and instil a routine in them. Also, tutors who put in effort after hours, such as staying back to help or creating personalised tasks to target their weak areas, are critical for students to excel in their studies. As a previously tutored student, I can guarantee that…

I think making students feel like they're being seen and heard is a really powerful thing, and to make clear that a tutor isn't just a fixed resource like a book or a video but someone you can interact with and learn from just from someone being there to guide you. I think learning from someone showing you is so much more powerful than just…

I believe a tutor should be confident in his/her abilities and express enthusiasm in teaching the student. A tutor should be honest and upfront about the student's misconceptions and errors and offer advice in a calm and helpful tone. I think the most important things are patience, as well as the ability to give them self-confidence in a subject. The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to become an understanding tutor. There is no point of forcing a student to learn something that they have no interest at. As a tutor, we should understand our students and help them to enjoy the subject they first do not like. Additionally, we should be able to figure out something that…

Inside EveleighTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Olivia practised converting between fractions, decimals, and percentages and also worked on finding percentages of quantities in everyday contexts.

Year 8 student Mason focused on expanding and factorising algebraic expressions as well as solving quadratic equations using the completing the square method.

Meanwhile, Year 9 student Aisha tackled trigonometric identities and began introductory differentiation, reinforcing both with targeted practice questions.

Recent Challenges

A Year 9 student showed a tendency to "jump to what he thinks is the answer—often a guess if he doesn't follow a logical process," especially in pattern and word problems.

In Year 7, one learner often avoided writing working out on paper, preferring mental calculation, which led to repeated basic errors ("Writing his working out on paper rather than doing it all in his head").

At senior level, hesitation with new types of questions surfaced: as noted in Year 11, "she hesitates to try and asks me how to do it rather than try it herself first." This can leave students feeling uncertain when independent problem-solving is required.

Recent Achievements

One Eveleigh tutor noticed a big shift with a Year 11 student who, after struggling to complete differentiation problems independently, managed to work through tricky questions on her own and even explained new methods back to the tutor.

In another high school session, a Year 10 student—who used to rush through area and perimeter questions without checking—has started pausing to think through each step before answering, leading to more accurate solutions.

Meanwhile, a younger student has begun asking for help when stuck rather than guessing quietly, showing much more openness during problem-solving.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Newtown Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Central Sydney Intensive English High School.
