The most important thing a tutor can do is help the student become **independent in their thinking**. It’s easy to just show solutions, but that creates dependency. A good tutor instead builds the student’s ability to approach problems on their own—how to think, how to break things down, and how to recover when they’re stuck. That…

I think a tutor can teach a student how to learn a topic after it is explained by the tutor. Because at the end, it is the student who needs to learn by themselves after something is being taught to them. A tutor should make sure that anyone can learn those topics on their own if they are introduced by the tutor. My first strength as a tutor is my…

Be an example. Be relaxed, and make the student enjoy the subject without feeling like education is be all end all. Knowledge and grades are only a means to an end, a tutor should make sure the students understand that. I can relate and communicate with students. I understand where they are coming from and what they are trying to…

A tutor has to be patient and welcoming for their students. The reason these students come for tutoring is because they face difficulty keeping up with school. So they should be given the space to understand at their own pace, in their own method and a teacher needs to recognize that. We need to recognize the method which we choose to teach a…

I believe it is important to understand the student's weaknesses and strengths before starting to teach them. I have come across a common problem with students, which is that they often jump straight into trying to solve a problem without fully understanding the theory/basics first. Hence, I try to first help them understand the basics then go…

A student will need a tutor because he/she couldn't understand what was being taught in class. The best thing for a tutor to do is focus on the parts that the student failed to understand and strengthen their understanding in those areas. The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to believe in them. Students already have bounds of pressure heaped on them, academic, parental, administrative, personal, etc. and sometimes all it takes is one Calculus question to bring them to their wit's end. A tutor must support their students throughout their learning journey and…

I believe support and encouragement are the most important elements that me as a tutor can help my students. The most important things a tutor can do for a student go beyond simply reviewing homework. A tutor must make sure the student truly understands the 'why' behind the concepts, especially in subjects like Math, Chemistry, and Biology. Rote memorization is temporary; genuine understanding, which comes from breaking down complex ideas, is permanent.…

I believe that it is important for tutors to be passionate about teaching. This way, it is easier for the student to gain interest in the subject, which ultimately leads to better performance from the student as they are more motivated to study and learn. I also think that it is important for tutors to create a comfortable learning environment for…

Inside FelixstowTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Em worked through the more challenging parts of a maths folio task, including strategies for formatting equations in Word, and began exploring REDOX reactions in Chemistry.

For Year 9, Isabel focused on expanding and factorising algebraic expressions and simplifying algebraic fractions.

In Year 10, Ana prepared for her exam by covering key theory from the functions and relations topic, an area she found particularly unfamiliar.

Recent Challenges

A Year 10 student often arrived at sessions without recent test papers or clear notes, making it hard to pinpoint gaps before exams—one tutor observed, "she hadn't brought her maths test home, so next time."

In Year 11, motivation to revise independently was low, with folio drafts left incomplete and little energy for organizing formal write-ups.

Meanwhile, a Year 7 learner's written work in Pythagoras' Theorem was described as needing clearer layout; corrections were required just to follow the logic.

In each case, confusion and disorganization led to frustration or missed opportunities for timely feedback.

Recent Achievements

A Felixstow tutoring session saw a Year 11 student become much more proactive—she now arrives with her own list of questions, and recently worked through every item in just one hour.

In another win, a high schooler who used to hesitate when facing algebraic proofs was able to tackle most steps independently, only checking in for minor guidance.

Meanwhile, a Year 7 student initially found trigonometric functions confusing but became noticeably more engaged after experimenting with different angle values during the lesson; she even asked for extra practice examples before finishing.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Payneham Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Felixstow Primary School.
