Inside FirleTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 10 student Sienna worked through quadratic equations by practising factorising and graphing, building a strong foundation for more advanced algebra.

In Year 11, Daniel focused on differentiation skills including finding derivatives, exploring inflection points, and analysing maximum and minimum values using sample curve sketches.

For Year 9, Milly revised surds—working with square roots and applying index laws to simplify expressions accurately.

Recent Challenges

In Year 11 Physics, a student struggled to select the right kinematics equation and had difficulty translating worded problems into diagrams—this often led to confusion about which variables to use.

As one tutor observed in Year 10 Maths, "he skipped showing steps in algebra, which hid sign errors," highlighting a tendency to write down numbers without clarifying their meaning or connection to the question.

Meanwhile, a Year 7 student found it challenging to organise her working clearly when handling positive and negative signs in algebra; unclear layout made tracking operations harder.

In upper primary, several students hesitated when recalling times tables, sometimes relying on written calculations for facts expected from memory—this slowed progress during more complex tasks like multi-digit multiplication.

Recent Achievements

One Firle tutor recently noticed a big shift in a Year 10 student who, after struggling with surds and index laws, began applying these concepts much more independently—she now solves operations with surds confidently and uses the right index rules without prompting.

In Year 9, another student who used to avoid correcting mistakes is now asking for extra questions on factorising and can walk through sum and product rule problems out loud, catching her own errors as she works.

Meanwhile, a younger student surprised her tutor by reading sentences aloud to self-check punctuation placement—something she hesitated to try before.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Payneham Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Trinity Gardens School.
