Be honest. This helps to establish rapport and trust, the two most critical elements to a successful tutoring relationship. Be flexible. This means being willing to adjust techniques and approaches to meet the learning styles of the student. Be patient. What is obvious or easy for you may not be so for your student. Learn not to show annoyance…

To attentively listen to the student (their stories, worries, and struggles), to identify areas that the student need more work on, trying different learning approaches, to be able to break down large problems into smaller easily managed tasks, and to share our life and study skills with them where relevant. As a tutor, I believe I am very…

Building a relationship and rapport with the student is vital for success in tutoring, it can be difficult for students to ask for help and accept it once given it, so making a student feel comfortable is the best strategy for ensuring success. I have a innovative and intuitive way of approaching problems and challenges and am confident expressing…

A few key responsibilities of a tutor, according to me, are as follows: Boosting a student's confidence and academic performance. Providing a safe space to ask questions without inhibition. Helping develop adaptability and time-management skills. Encouraging independent and critical thinking. Improving a student's overall attitude towards…

A tutor should offer an individualised teaching method that works to that student's strengths and takes into account any weaknesses. Whether that mean explaining new concepts in more engaging ways or focusing on certain aspects that a student is finding particularly difficult to grasp. A tutor should also help students feel more confident in their…

It should be the ability to make the students feel comfortable during your sessions. The students should be able to relate with me and feel free to clear any doubts they may have. I’d say I’m also currently a student so I know which areas to focus on so that the student can benefit the most from my sessions and also the fact that I have the…

Empowering the student is the most important thing I can do as a tutor. It is clear to me that my goal is not for the student to be dependent on me as a tutor. But, I am there to help and guide, to support and mentor, so that the student becomes capable and confident to do things on their own and progress further. Empowering someone else is not an…

I think the most important things a tutor can do are listen and build trust. When a student feels heard and supported, they're much more willing to engage and take on challenges. Beyond that, a good tutor identifies why a student is struggling not just what they're struggling with and meets them at their level. Ultimately, the goal isn't just to…

I think encouraging the student is the most important thing a tutor can do even more than results as if the student begins to become more inquisitive and enterprising in their own learning they will do better overall. To build a student’s confidence in the subject is to solve half of their problems for them. I think the most important things a tutor can do are to create a supportive, encouraging environment and to build the student's confidence. It’s essential to make sure the student feels comfortable asking questions and making mistakes because that’s…

I think a tutor is someone who can work with the student towards better mastery of a subject and be compassionate towards them. Yes, there are techniques and structure specific tutors can follow, but I think it is important to gauge how well the student is progressing and try different things, if it is not working out. This also goes if the…

To reiterate, I think personalization is a key facet of good tutoring. Every student is likely to have different needs and learning styles, and it is important to adapt course material and teaching style to best suit their needs, while clarifying concepts effectively and accurately. Also, making the concept/subject appear less daunting and more…

Inside FitzroyTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Gus focused on measurement skills including unit conversions, perimeter, and an introduction to surface area, as well as exploring the angle sum in triangles.

In Year 9, Maryam worked on solving simultaneous equations using substitution and elimination, then applied these methods to practical problems.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Ali reviewed operations with fractions—adding, subtracting, multiplying with different denominators—and extended this knowledge to simplifying algebraic fractional expressions.

Recent Challenges

A Year 6 student in Fitzroy showed difficulty setting out work neatly and consistently dating pages, making it harder to track progress—especially when tackling worded measurement problems.

As one tutor observed, "she struggles to walk through questions speaking out loud," which made it tough to clarify her thinking on fraction conversions and unit changes.

In Year 10 English, a student forgot to submit an essay by the deadline, delaying feedback and causing extra stress before class.

A senior maths student arrived unprepared for sessions without essential materials like a pen or laptop; this slowed the start and limited practice time.

Recent Achievements

One Fitzroy tutor noticed a Year 11 student, Celeste, who used to hesitate with trigonometry word problems now confidently solves bearings and graphing tasks on her own—she even tackles complex questions without prompting.

In another session, Maryam (Year 10) moved from confusion about box plots to clearly explaining five-figure summaries and solving simultaneous equations using both substitution and elimination methods.

Meanwhile, in Year 6 maths, Ella showed a shift from struggling with measurement topics to independently working through area and volume questions, finishing her test section on these without needing hints.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Fitzroy Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Sacred Heart School.
