Well, one is to build the student's confidence! I want them to be able to think independently and instil in their minds to avoid the use of AI tools like ChatGPT. I want to create a comfortable space where they can make mistakes and learn from them! A good tutor does not just give the answers, and I'd guide them to find the answers themselves. 1:1…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is build their confidence in solving problems independently. I want students to understand the concepts, ask questions without hesitation, and eventually feel confident working through problems on their own. I think one of my biggest strengths is that I’m a problem solver. That’s…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do is build a student’s confidence while helping them understand the subject. It’s not just about giving answers but helping them learn how to think and solve problems on their own. Creating a supportive and patient environment is also really important so students feel comfortable asking questions.…

I consider creating a positive and supportive learning atmosphere as paramount for a tutor. Beyond academic assistance, it involves nurturing confidence, offering constructive feedback, and acknowledging achievements. Tailoring teaching methods to accommodate individual learning styles is equally vital. Effective communication, coupled with active…

I think the most important things a tutor can do are listen and build trust. When a student feels heard and supported, they're much more willing to engage and take on challenges. Beyond that, a good tutor identifies why a student is struggling not just what they're struggling with and meets them at their level. Ultimately, the goal isn't just to…

A tutor should consider each student individually and teach them according to the student's strengths and weakness. He must be persistent and discplined so that he can encourage the student to follow the same. He must be patient and never get upset with a student no matter how hard a subject feels to them. I am patient and a good listener. I will…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do is empower a student to think for themselves. As a peer mentor at RMIT, I focused on giving students the tools to solve problems independently, while also providing the historical context of those problems. When a student understands the logic of those who came before them, they are better equipped…

I think teachers should genuinely care about their students and their mental wellbeing, not just their grades. Moreover, teachers should always be patient and never lose their tamper no matter what. I am quite patient and I try to explain the solutions in multiple different ways. Also, I think teaching is a message that goes beyond the classroom…

My focus is always on life-long learning, not just in a particular subject or area, but rather on skills and mindsets that allow the students to grow, not just in academics, but in their lives. Hence, the best thing a tutor can do for a student is to encourage and build these mindsets and approaches to learning. Definitely being patient with the…

The most important thing a tutor can do is to show real life examples or threads that the student can relate to while learning new concepts. The learning in such an approach will lead to a properly spun network of knowledge with related real-life examples which will be easier to recollect for the student. And always make sure to feed what the…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to keep them motivated. Often at a young age if we fail to grasp a concept it can damage our self-confidence. Therefore it is a tutor's responsibility to bring out the 'never give up'attitude in students and motivate them to continue trying until they can overcome the hurdle. Tutors should…

One thing that I believe in is that no student is slow or unable to understand something; anyone can understand and do anything as long as they are taught how to. The process of learning is what may vary from person to person. My core strength would be the ability to explain any concept, no matter how complex. I can break it down to simple bits…

To make them understand the difference between cramming and learning. The tutor can assist students with especific exercises or topics, but the most important thing a tutor can do is to assist students in developing their own potential. The most important thing a tutor can impart to her/his student is the ability to motivate. Motivation instills a passion, may it be for the subject taught or the anything beyond school hours, it gives the student a sense of purpose and drives the student to be ambitious. On a surface level outlook a tutor is just meant to teach their students and be on their way. But in my perspective, there is more to it than just teaching. A tutor is about being a capable mentor that identifies the student's weaknesses in class and mentally so there is always something the student can work upon both academically and mentally.…

Inside FitzroyTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Gus focused on measurement skills including unit conversions, perimeter, and an introduction to surface area, as well as exploring the angle sum in triangles.

In Year 9, Maryam worked on solving simultaneous equations using substitution and elimination, then applied these methods to practical problems.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Ali reviewed operations with fractions—adding, subtracting, multiplying with different denominators—and extended this knowledge to simplifying algebraic fractional expressions.

Recent Challenges

A Year 6 student in Fitzroy showed difficulty setting out work neatly and consistently dating pages, making it harder to track progress—especially when tackling worded measurement problems.

As one tutor observed, "she struggles to walk through questions speaking out loud," which made it tough to clarify her thinking on fraction conversions and unit changes.

In Year 10 English, a student forgot to submit an essay by the deadline, delaying feedback and causing extra stress before class.

A senior maths student arrived unprepared for sessions without essential materials like a pen or laptop; this slowed the start and limited practice time.

Recent Achievements

One Fitzroy tutor noticed a Year 11 student, Celeste, who used to hesitate with trigonometry word problems now confidently solves bearings and graphing tasks on her own—she even tackles complex questions without prompting.

In another session, Maryam (Year 10) moved from confusion about box plots to clearly explaining five-figure summaries and solving simultaneous equations using both substitution and elimination methods.

Meanwhile, in Year 6 maths, Ella showed a shift from struggling with measurement topics to independently working through area and volume questions, finishing her test section on these without needing hints.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Fitzroy Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Sacred Heart School.
