The most important things that a tutor can do for a student are: - Showing empathy and support (sharing one's own experience as a past student from a perspective of strength, resilience and learning) - Promoting empowerment - this means not doing questions for a student, but engaging them in shared decision-making about working through…

To help them become confident and self-sufficient in the subject! I work to fill the gaps in knowledge that often hold students back from achieving all they are capable of. I know what it's like to struggle with maths in high school and so relate to students who may be less confident. My approach is to break exercises down into little parts,…

A tutor should offer an individualised teaching method that works to that student's strengths and takes into account any weaknesses. Whether that mean explaining new concepts in more engaging ways or focusing on certain aspects that a student is finding particularly difficult to grasp. A tutor should also help students feel more confident in their…

Varying teaching methods to provide students with a greater opportunity to learn is important. Every student has different strengths and weaknesses. Instead of just focusing on one method that only appeals to a single learning style, varying teaching techniques can cater your lessons to different learning styles. Students will be more successful…

Patience and stand in their point of view. Because kids have their own opinions and there is not wrong in their points even if the points in the adult's view is not accessible. All we can do that is be patience to listen and consider their opinion and give advice. Communication. I 'd like to share the information to the kids and like to talk to…

Patience is the most inevitable element. I think tutor should dedicate the most of their time, even outside of tutoring session, to answer students inquiry. This shows responsibility and how much a tutor care about their students Patience and well-communication skill. I think it’s important to identify what the student is struggling, hence help…

Tutors play a key role in helping students believe in their abilities and equipping them with the skills to learn proactively. To achieve this, we must create a safe and non-judgemental space where students feel comfortable making mistakes and asking questions. Alongside this, tutors should always provide clear explanations and guidance to make…

Empowering the student is the most important thing I can do as a tutor. It is clear to me that my goal is not for the student to be dependent on me as a tutor. But, I am there to help and guide, to support and mentor, so that the student becomes capable and confident to do things on their own and progress further. Empowering someone else is not an…

Be patient. Tutors must always be patient with students as both stand on different levels in education and understanding. What may have come easily to the tutor may not come so easily for the student. Furthermore, what seems extremely easy to the tutor may be very hard for their student. Therefore, it is imperative that the tutor is patient in…

This is so that students can understand better. I have empathy and I will give care and very good patience to my students. At the same time I am very planned…

I think teachers should genuinely care about their students and their mental wellbeing, not just their grades. Moreover, teachers should always be patient and never lose their tamper no matter what. The student should understand the concepts from basic. Students should be given the regular exams in order to test their learning process. Tutors are the ones who shape the future of a child. Through their knowledge they help students to overcome their subjects by providing conceptual clarity. As I said sticking with them the knowledge has been properly imparted is probably the most important thing. The other thing would be to make sure that the student is comfortable with the teaching methods and is having fun. Inside FitzroyTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Gus focused on measurement skills including unit conversions, perimeter, and an introduction to surface area, as well as exploring the angle sum in triangles.

In Year 9, Maryam worked on solving simultaneous equations using substitution and elimination, then applied these methods to practical problems.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Ali reviewed operations with fractions—adding, subtracting, multiplying with different denominators—and extended this knowledge to simplifying algebraic fractional expressions.

Recent Challenges

A Year 6 student in Fitzroy showed difficulty setting out work neatly and consistently dating pages, making it harder to track progress—especially when tackling worded measurement problems.

As one tutor observed, "she struggles to walk through questions speaking out loud," which made it tough to clarify her thinking on fraction conversions and unit changes.

In Year 10 English, a student forgot to submit an essay by the deadline, delaying feedback and causing extra stress before class.

A senior maths student arrived unprepared for sessions without essential materials like a pen or laptop; this slowed the start and limited practice time.

Recent Achievements

One Fitzroy tutor noticed a Year 11 student, Celeste, who used to hesitate with trigonometry word problems now confidently solves bearings and graphing tasks on her own—she even tackles complex questions without prompting.

In another session, Maryam (Year 10) moved from confusion about box plots to clearly explaining five-figure summaries and solving simultaneous equations using both substitution and elimination methods.

Meanwhile, in Year 6 maths, Ella showed a shift from struggling with measurement topics to independently working through area and volume questions, finishing her test section on these without needing hints.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Fitzroy Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Sacred Heart School.
