The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to act as a guide in finding their way around the challenging problems. I believe that tutors are not just there to help students with their work but to equip them with necessary skills to solve the problems on their own. Moreover, tutors acting as guides also meant that if students are…

I see being a one-on-one tutor who has the capacity to give quality time and attention to students as one of the most important things for a student - a tutor can go in-depth on certain topics, can asnwer specific questions, and can act as a personal cheerleader to motivate students. Often simply having someone to help and guide them other than a…

I believe the most important things a tutor can do for a student are to provide clear explanations, build their confidence, and create a supportive learning environment. A tutor should break down complex topics in a way that makes sense to the student, ensuring they truly understand rather than just memorize. Encouragement is also key—helping…

The most important task as a tutor would be to adapt to students’ learning methods. It is imperative to understand that everyone has their own pace and techniques to cope with difficulties, as a tutor, it is my responsibility to account for all possibilities. My strength as a tutor would be my patience. To be honest, it is a skill I’m still…

A tutor is very important in providing support outside school. Ensuring that the student finds learning to be fun and interesting, in my opinion, is more important than focusing on higher grades. As a tutor, it is important to cultivate interest in students and create knowledge. I am great at teaching students with learning disabilities and…

I believe the most important being a tutor was the ability to express clearly so that students are able to understand the contents being taught clearly while not being felt that they are isolated because they are behind others who could understand from the get go. Personally, I believe the most important things a tutor can do is being fully aware of the student's experience so that the tutor can adapt their own teaching styles and interactions in order to best support the student. This not only contributes to the process of learning content, but also to the wellbeing of the student under tutelage as…

Inside FitzroyTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Gus focused on measurement skills including unit conversions, perimeter, and an introduction to surface area, as well as exploring the angle sum in triangles.

In Year 9, Maryam worked on solving simultaneous equations using substitution and elimination, then applied these methods to practical problems.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Ali reviewed operations with fractions—adding, subtracting, multiplying with different denominators—and extended this knowledge to simplifying algebraic fractional expressions.

Recent Challenges

A Year 6 student in Fitzroy showed difficulty setting out work neatly and consistently dating pages, making it harder to track progress—especially when tackling worded measurement problems.

As one tutor observed, "she struggles to walk through questions speaking out loud," which made it tough to clarify her thinking on fraction conversions and unit changes.

In Year 10 English, a student forgot to submit an essay by the deadline, delaying feedback and causing extra stress before class.

A senior maths student arrived unprepared for sessions without essential materials like a pen or laptop; this slowed the start and limited practice time.

Recent Achievements

One Fitzroy tutor noticed a Year 11 student, Celeste, who used to hesitate with trigonometry word problems now confidently solves bearings and graphing tasks on her own—she even tackles complex questions without prompting.

In another session, Maryam (Year 10) moved from confusion about box plots to clearly explaining five-figure summaries and solving simultaneous equations using both substitution and elimination methods.

Meanwhile, in Year 6 maths, Ella showed a shift from struggling with measurement topics to independently working through area and volume questions, finishing her test section on these without needing hints.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Fitzroy Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Sacred Heart School.
