I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to understand its individual needs. Every student has unique learning styles, strengths, and areas for improvement. It's essential to take the time to understand each student's specific needs, challenges, and goals. By assessing their current knowledge and identifying gaps in…

A tutor is basically a role model for the student. If a tutor can quickly solve anonymous problem then student can definitely be motivated and solve there sums. Additionally, Tutor should also connect with the student so that student can discuss the issues faced by them before the exam. Tutors should conduct regular test and provide quick…

I think as a tutor, if you can make sure the student relates the problem with their day-to-day scenario, then it would be much easier for the student to learn. I think effective communication is one of my strengths which is required when you are tutoring students, along with…

To be responsive and adaptable, so whenever the student needs help I should be able to help him I did math in France in Preparatory Classes, during that time I discovered how important the way the teacher/ tutor explains, helps you to understand ! So I’ll always try to find a solution to explain in another way if…

Empowering the student is the most important thing I can do as a tutor. It is clear to me that my goal is not for the student to be dependent on me as a tutor. But, I am there to help and guide, to support and mentor, so that the student becomes capable and confident to do things on their own and progress further. Empowering someone else is not an…

Personally, I believe the most important things a tutor can do is being fully aware of the student's experience so that the tutor can adapt their own teaching styles and interactions in order to best support the student. This not only contributes to the process of learning content, but also to the wellbeing of the student under tutelage as…

Tutors must have an understanding of how their students learn and be able to adapt to that teaching style. As well as the tutors ability to connect with their student in order to create a more comfortable learning environment. Explain information in a way that the specific student can understand. Once again, up to secondary years of mathematics there certainly is not one way to explain and eventually solve problems. I was always more inclined to be self-taught when it came to maths in secondary school as I often found the ways it taught to be confusing and…

I think the most important things a tutor can do are listen and build trust. When a student feels heard and supported, they're much more willing to engage and take on challenges. Beyond that, a good tutor identifies why a student is struggling not just what they're struggling with and meets them at their level. Ultimately, the goal isn't just to…

A tutor that can go down to the student's level and cater to their needs in a unique way is very important. The most importat thing I believe is to be available for a student when he/she needs you. It is also important to be accessible to them by answering all their doubts and be there for them till they understand a certain concept. I can be a student's friend and help them understand every concept by being their confidante. I can make them enjoy their…

Inside FitzroyTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Gus focused on measurement skills including unit conversions, perimeter, and an introduction to surface area, as well as exploring the angle sum in triangles.

In Year 9, Maryam worked on solving simultaneous equations using substitution and elimination, then applied these methods to practical problems.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Ali reviewed operations with fractions—adding, subtracting, multiplying with different denominators—and extended this knowledge to simplifying algebraic fractional expressions.

Recent Challenges

A Year 6 student in Fitzroy showed difficulty setting out work neatly and consistently dating pages, making it harder to track progress—especially when tackling worded measurement problems.

As one tutor observed, "she struggles to walk through questions speaking out loud," which made it tough to clarify her thinking on fraction conversions and unit changes.

In Year 10 English, a student forgot to submit an essay by the deadline, delaying feedback and causing extra stress before class.

A senior maths student arrived unprepared for sessions without essential materials like a pen or laptop; this slowed the start and limited practice time.

Recent Achievements

One Fitzroy tutor noticed a Year 11 student, Celeste, who used to hesitate with trigonometry word problems now confidently solves bearings and graphing tasks on her own—she even tackles complex questions without prompting.

In another session, Maryam (Year 10) moved from confusion about box plots to clearly explaining five-figure summaries and solving simultaneous equations using both substitution and elimination methods.

Meanwhile, in Year 6 maths, Ella showed a shift from struggling with measurement topics to independently working through area and volume questions, finishing her test section on these without needing hints.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Fitzroy Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Sacred Heart School.
