I think the most important things an english tutor can do are to make learning clear, build the student’s confidence, and be patient and supportive. A good tutor helps students understand rather than just memorise, encourages questions, and creates a comfortable space where students feel confident to learn and improve. I think my strengths as a…

Confidence is the most important thing an english tutor can bring to a student struggling with English. Knowledge and new skills can be taught to anyone, but a tutor should be able to instil a confidence within student so they can bring these skills into their learning but also into their everyday life. This is achieved by building relationships…

I believe that tutors must have a good attitude and genuinely enjoy the concepts and the subject. Without this, the student will most likely find the tutoring bland and boring, which would reduce their engagement and their overall performance and knowledge in the subject. My experience as a tennis coach has shown me how different students learn at…

The number one most important thing an english tutor can do for a student is make sure that the student builds a strong understanding of the content. There is a difference between knowing how to work out a problem, and why a problem is solved the way it is. I think that when you understand the why instead of just how it becomes very simple to…

The most important thing that an english tutor can do for the students is to motivate and encourage them to do their best. I believe that results are mostly achieved through the effort of the students themselves, so as a tutor I try my best to cover all the concepts and to provide my students with support materials, but I also make sure that my…

The tutor must be supportive of their work and problems as well where students can feel comfortable around you in expressing their opinions and with their own work. A tutor must be engaging from the moment they first meet the student, to how they deliver the tutoring, to the last second that they leave each tutoring session. A tutor must also be…

I think that an english tutor should be approachable - the student shouldn't be afraid to say that they don't understand something. I believe that teaching is not about pumping a student with exam papers or to make them memorise the answers and get good grades, for my satisfaction. But about really making sure the student understands a concept, so that they have a strong foundation and can apply to it many different question styles. This will actively stimulate creativity and…

Inside Flagstaff HillTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Ben focused on trigonometry basics and solving linear equations using clear step-by-step examples.

In Year 10, Jessica worked through expanding and factorising algebraic expressions as well as applying the laws of indices to simplify problems.

Meanwhile, Year 12 student Daniel tackled advanced calculus topics including logarithmic and exponential differentiation, and practiced finding the equation of a tangent line using derivatives from first principles.

Recent Challenges

In Year 11 Methods, one student often condensed multi-step trigonometry questions into a single line, which made it hard to locate errors when reviewing. If he made a mistake somewhere, troubleshooting became very difficult.

In Year 9 algebra, another student's written work lacked structure and clear working, so sign errors or factorisation missteps weren't visible for correction.

Meanwhile, a Year 12 specialist student hesitated to ask for more paper during an exam and ran out of space; this limited their ability to show full solutions. In each case, crucial steps went unseen—and important feedback was missed.

Recent Achievements

One Flagstaff Hill tutor noticed a Year 11 student who used to skip writing out her working now consistently details every step when solving derivatives, leading to fewer errors and more accurate answers.

In a recent Year 8 session, a student who had previously hesitated to ask for help started initiating questions with the teacher and included a proper bibliography in his assignment—something he'd never attempted before.

Meanwhile, a younger student in Year 4, who once guessed at multiplication problems silently, now talks through each calculation aloud and checks her own carrying of numbers without prompting.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Aberfoyle Park (The Hub) Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Flagstaff Hill Primary School.
