First and foremost, a tutor must have faith in his/her student. Having faith means having the trust that her students have the capability to excel not just academically but, in character development as well. As a tutor, I am not only an assistant in my student’s academic work. I am also a role model whom my student will look up to. Therefore, I…

Being patient and guide them through how they should solve their problems instead of forcing only one way to them. Give them examples on how things should be with the aid of diagrams to picture the problem to them and make them think of the solution instead of blindly giving them answers. I am a persevered and patient person. I will be patient and…

Instil in a student a love of learning; teach them how to learn and how to manage their own education. It is relatively easy to study enough to get good marks in an exam, but having a positive attitude and active approach towards learning leads to much better information retention and better outcomes in the future, when the student is on their…

In my personal opinion besides teaching a student what is in the unit/study guide, a tutor should be taking responsibility in creating a fun learning environment and encouraging and motivating the students to be confident. This would help to enhance the students performance. The strength I have as an individual is I am able to create a comfortable…

It's often frustrating not to understand what is being taught in class and feeling behind. In addition to teaching and explaining the academic material, I believe a good tutor also provides encouragement to the students and potentially even evoke inspiration and genuine curiosity in that field. I believe that it's crucial for a tutor to create an open and supportive relationship with their student. A student needs to feel comfortable to ask questions and communicate what they need, and it's the tutor's responsibility to create a space where that is possible. As an older sister (and informal tutor) to a 10-year-old little girl, I've…

I think tutors have to have the appropriate amount of empathy to understand, not only the way they learn, but also their reason for learning. Best thing tutor can do is align his values with his student's. I think this is a way to frustrate and alienate him. I can approach a problem the way student does. This gives me an insight into where they…

I believe the most important things a tutor can do are to create a supportive environment, build the student’s confidence, and help them develop independent learning skills. In my perspective, providing confidence is the most important thing a tutor can do for a student. The majority of people would hire a tutor is because of one's unsatisfactory performance towards the subject. Confidence would increase the understanding process for most of the people. Furthermore, to excel in the subject, the student has to work…

I believe the most important thing a tutor brings is 1 to 1 guidance. A good tutor can work with the student and guide them to achieve their individual goals, and can adjust their methods and pace as necessary, unlike in a class at school where the pace of teaching is same for everyone. I have a strong grasp of the sciences and English, and I…

Inside FlemingtonTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Alice worked on calculating mean, median, mode, and range in statistics as well as identifying angles with symmetry using visual examples.

In Year 9, Bita practised solving linear equations and worked through a worksheet on mean, median and mode provided by her teacher.

For Year 10, Laura focused on revising algebra and graphing techniques from the Year 11 curriculum to strengthen her foundation for upcoming studies.

Recent Challenges

A Year 11 student preparing for a statistics test hesitated to share which probability topics felt hardest, making it difficult to target weak spots; her notebook was also missing dates, so tracking progress became confusing.

In Year 9 algebra, as one tutor put it, "he skipped showing steps in simplification, which hid sign errors"—extra time was then spent hunting mistakes instead of building confidence.

A Year 7 student left homework incomplete before lessons and struggled with organizing exercise books and teacher feedback requests.

During Year 12 revision, reluctance to attempt unfamiliar graph questions led to gaps ahead of the upcoming test.

Recent Achievements

One Flemington tutor noticed a big change in a Year 11 student who used to freeze up on tough algebra questions—now, after working through some challenging Further Maths problems, he confidently explained his reasoning and tackled even the trickiest ones without hesitation.

In another session, a Year 9 student who'd struggled to distinguish between explanatory and response variables was able to clearly verbalise his thought process and correctly identify each one during practice.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 student who once guessed at answers now talks through her multiplication steps out loud and checks her work before moving on.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Flemington Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Kensington Community High School.
