As a tutor, you play an important role in a student's mentality towards education. A tutor should aim to correct the "I can't do it" mindset that many students have into an "I can't do it now, but with some guidance and work I will be able to" mindset. But a tutor should also be able to help an already excelling student to achieve higher and to…

The upmost integral thing a tutor can do for a student is to demonstrate support. I've learnt that all students need in education is an abundance of support. I, as a tutor would want to be one of the pillars that support the student in their education. To me, supporting them involves teaching the work, giving feedback, and encourage them to do…

I think the tutor should aim to not just teach the subject or concept, but provide alternative ways to think, conceptualise and learn said concepts. Ideally, a tutor can spark a passion or enjoyment in a new area by teaching it in a way that really connects to their unique student. I think being able to create habits where the student looks…

First and foremost, make sure the student properly understands all the content. From there, a tutor should provide refinement, using their experience to show their students how to tackle exams and tests. I ardently want to see my students succeed, and will put in the effort to achieve this. Completing the most recent version of the study design…

One of the most important things a tutor can do for a student is to create an environment where the student is happy and willing to learn. Having an environment as such makes the task of learning and teaching easier on both the student and the tutor. One of my strengths as a tutor are that i am able to communicate effectively. The most important things a tutor can do are to guide the student to where he/she wants to be/go. Showing them the right path and being patient with the student is crucial, and also going above and beyond to ensure the student is at the highest capability to perform well. My strengths would definitely be my passion for sharing knowledge and…

The most important thing I can do as a tutor is provide a second perspective on the student's year 12 experience. While completing VCE, our school hired students who had finished year 12 the year before to be available after school and during classes to tutor. While they hadn't had any formal tutoring experience, I found that the best thing they…

One of the best things a tutor can do for a student is offer encouragement and support. Beyond simply teaching the material effectively, tutors have to recognise that for the student, there are compounding events and pressures that they face during high school. Ultimately, it will fall on the tutor to ensure that the student enjoys being tutored…

I think the most important thing is to be encouraging and make sure they know how much you believe in them. I think that once you believe you can you are basically halfway there I'm kind and incredibly patient! I was also a very visual learner so didn't quite get the approach most teachers took at school. Particularly year 11 and 12 I had to find…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student would be to be able to have the student reach their goals in their school work, tests and grades. I am great at explaining things in details. I believe that when the right tutor is paired with the right student, they can help the student to understand the pleasure of academic subjects. A tutor's responsibility, in my opinion, should be to identify why the student may be struggling in that specific area of academics and then to adjust their teaching approach and technique to cater for…

Inside GardenvaleTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Nikki focused on solving real-world division problems like calculating cost per kilogram and interpreting results in full sentences, as well as practising key elements of showing working and reasoning.

Year 8 student Celia worked through index laws using examples to solidify understanding, and revised algebraic equations ahead of her test.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Bonnie tackled trigonometry topics including sin/cos/tan ratios and the Pythagoras theorem, with extra attention on applying formulas to a variety of question types.

Recent Challenges

In Year 9, one student's working was repeatedly erased instead of crossed out during scientific notation tasks—"This will waste a lot of time especially during tests," as noted by the tutor.

In Year 11, missing key details in text-heavy exam questions led to confusion when indirect information was required, not just direct calculations.

Meanwhile, a Year 5 student struggled to keep their answers organized in multi-step fraction problems; they tended to panic when timed and lost track of steps.

For a senior English essay, lack of planning made it hard for ideas to flow smoothly between paragraphs, leaving arguments disconnected.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Gardenvale noticed a big change with Celia, a high school student who used to hesitate when faced with new algebraic laws—now she's not only picking them up quickly but also applying them independently during sessions.

In another case, Bonnie, also in high school, showed real initiative by pinpointing which maths topics she struggled with before her exam and then confidently using her CAS calculator to tackle those questions on her own.

Meanwhile, a younger student recently surprised her tutor by clearly writing down every division question she found confusing instead of skipping them, making it easier to review and master those tricky spots together.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Elsternwick Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Leibler Yavneh College.
